The Role
I really enjoyed the placement. I learnt lots and enjoyed getting involved in extra things with colleagues, such as weekly walks around the Macclesfield area.
I felt valued by my colleagues but as I was mainly working with just one person-my supervisor, I didn't really have much to do with other colleagues and so they possibly didn't value me as much.
My supervisor gave me lots of guidance and support, yet allowed me to work independently. I learnt lots of useful and interesting information from him.
This varied depending on how well particular reactions were working. I was generally busy but there were times when I did not have much to do.
I was given responsibility as my supervisor went on holiday and I was left to manage my own time and decide which direction to go with the chemistry. However I always had someone there to help if needed.
The skills I have developed in this placement will be very helpful to me in the rest of my degree and future. After working in the labs for 10 weeks in this placement I feel much more confident and I have also been able to use equipment that I have not previously had access to, eg uhplc-ms and biotage chromatography.

The Culture
Living costs very expensive, however socialising was not too expensive.
