The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my year placement at KPMG. It enabled me to gain an insight into the audit function as well as sitting some of the exams that form part of the ACA qualification.
I was treated as a graduate joiner and therefore felt valued by my colleagues. I was given the same opportunities and experiences as the graduates. I also made some great friends during the year.
I was assigned both a mentor and a performance manager both of whom were a great deal support. There was also a specific support system set up for qualificaiton and training who dealt with related issues. My managers always ensured that I was fully briefed and understood what I was required to do before letting me commence any of the work.
This varied from day to day. During busy season (January to March) I was very busy and was required to work long hours. However, there were other times when I had little to do and could therefore leave at a reasonable time.
During my placement I was given a lot of responsibility especially on the smaller clients and towards the end of my year I was also allocated work that was not expected of someone of my grade.
During the year my skills developed and I was provided with relevant traiing that helped me to progress during the year. Sitting some of the ACA exams also helped with ym day to day work.
The Company
Everyone in my department was very friendly and sociable and we had a number of social events organised for the department.
The internship was very well organised and the fact that I was able to do the year as if I was graduate meant that I gained a lot of experience and skills during the year.
The company invested a lot of time and money into training and development especially in terms of the ACA qualification.

Company Parties/Events
I have been offered a job with KPMG for once I have graduated and will then effectively pick up where I left off and will not have ot start from the beginning again.
The Culture
There were no other placement students in the Birmingham office however there was a good social scene both within my peer group and my departments.
The cost of living and socialising in Birmingham were reasonable. I was able to afford to rent a flat in the city centre, have a car, play sports and also socialise.
The nightlife in Birmingham is very good; there are a wide variety of clubs and bars to suite everyone.
There were opportunities to get involved with fitness centres, sports teams as well as other social clubs throughout Birmingham.
