    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at KPMG. I was able to get some excellent work experience working with real clients. This gave me a good idea of what the job would entail. The internship was not only enjoyable, but the whole experience was made even more positive as I was offered a graduate position at the end of my time placement.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at KPMG made me feel really valued and welcomed by having a friendly attitude towards me. This made me much more comfortable as I was definitely a little bit nervous on my first day. They were always willing to give up their time help me with any problems I encountered. I'm really looking forward to working with them when I graduate.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The management were very supportive during the internship. When I first arrived my manager introduced himself and made sure I knew what would be involved during the internship and offered to help me if I needed it. I also met with my manager during the internship to review my progress and at the end I was able to talk through my experiences. My manager also made sure that other colleagues were there to help if he wasn't available.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on a daily basis but that is the nature of the job. That is also the type environment I really enjoy to work in and feel I work best in so I was very comfortable with this aspect of the internship. I didn't find any of the tasks boring and there was always a challenge or something interesting to be doing. If there was no work for me I was able to prepare for my final interview which I found really valuable.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • To say this was only an internship I feel that I was given a great deal of responsibility. I found this really helpful and have gained so much from this experience. I got to meet clients and go out on real jobs with other colleagues, and was treated and valued as a respected member of the team. This experience will definitely help me as I start my job with KPMG when I graduate.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt and developed several skills during my internship with KPMG that will definitely benefit me during my degree and future work with the company. As I was able to speak to clients I gained a lot of confidence and would now be very happy to do this when I start work with the company. I also developed my presentation skills as part of the final interview was to give a presentation to a senior colleague.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was great and everyone was really friendly and it never seemed like too much effort for them to help me out if I was stuck. People were also very happy to chat and this put me at ease as an intern as beforehand I was nervous about what we would talk about. People were also happy to talk about my work and showed genuine interest in what I was doing.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall the internship was quite well organised and things seemed to run smoothly the majority of the time. Before the internship I was given all the internship I needed to be successful. On the first day of the internship, all of the interns went to London to find out even more about what we'd be doing over the next few weeks.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a great deal of time, effort and money to train and develop us as individuals. They provided us with our own laptops to do our own individual research, complete online modules and to enable us to prepare fully for our final interview and complete our presentations in the best way possible. I feel as though the company were very pro-active in developing us as individuals.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects within the organisation are really appealing especially as I was able to secure a job for at the end of the internship. I am looking forward to starting this job and think that the internship has given me an accurate taste of what the job will involve.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was an excellent social scene amongst those of us doing the placement. I met some really nice, friendly people who I still keep in contact with now. We went out on social events such as a bowling night and we were all invited to a party held by the company too which gave us even more of an opportunity to get to know each other.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I already lived in the Manchester area (the area I was working in) I can't really comment on the cost of living. However, the cost of socialising was very reasonable. Some of us on the internship would sometimes go out after work when our hours had finished and the cost was always affordable. It was always a good night out too.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Manchester is very good. There are several pubs, clubs and restaurants to go to. There's also bowling and a cinema that are open very late on so I would sometimes go there after work. The office was in a very central area meaning that pretty much all of these places were accessible easily on foot.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work and I'm sure that there will be even more when I actually start working for the company. One thing I did was play in a five a side football match where we were against another firm. This was a really fun experience and also let me get to know some of my colleagues.
