The Role
I really enjoyed my placement with Dyson. They provided a great amount of training and opportunities to get stuck into real projects with good levels of responsibility. The year enabled me to learn a great deal about engineering and also about working life in general. Dyson treat their employees really well and there were loads of facilities and perks available.
During the placement I settled in really quickly and immediately felt part of the team into which I was placed. It didn't feel as if I was a placement student, rather another full employee. To that extent I was given projects which were interesting and by no means menial. I was supported by the team throughout the placement.
The management structure was well thought through and worked well. My direct line manager was happy for me to get on with my own work and I was encouraged to set my own timeplans and deliverables. He was also very happy to help when I needed assistance or guidance. With catch-up meeting arranged every week I was given a good amount of support.
I was kept busy from day 1 when I was given my firs project brief. Day to day tasks included conducting research and literature reviews, lab testing, prototype designing and building and attending meetings. Dyson also offer training days where you learn about different aspects of the company or develop new/existing skills. I always had work to be getting on with.
Since Dyson treat their placement students as normal employees, you are given responsibility over your own projects immediately. I was expected to meet deadlines and get work done in a timely fashion. I was the lead engineer on my project and was solely responsible for meeting the deliverables in the timescale given.
I attended lots of training sessions and developed lots of skills relating to engineering and I think they will be of great help to my Uni. Courses included CAD training, Excel, milling and lathe training and many more. As well as the training, the projects I was tasked with helped me to develop independent learning, presentation, time management and people skills, which will be invaluable for my degree studies.
The Company
The atmosphere at Dyson is good. Everyone is willing to help you out from different teams and people were really friendly from the outset. The campus looks really nice and there were loads of great facilities including a sports center and a nature walk. Dress code is casual which helps to promote a comfortable working environment.
The placement was set up really well. I was briefed on my first day about my project, and there was 2 weeks of inductions which enabled us to get settled in and learn about the company. We were able to choose which training we wanted to attend and had good contacts in HR who were willing to help out over any placement queries.
Dyson were great at investing in their employees towards their personal development. As mentioned above, the training days were provided in order to help us develop our skills in many different areas including practical skills and computer literacy skills. They catered to lots of different abilities, for example, running basic, intermediate and advanced CAD training packages depending on your current skill level.

The Culture
There was a lot of after work activities that you could sign up to. These included sports teams like football, cycling, badminton and more casual social clubs. I was on placement with about 20 summer students and 6 full year placements. We met up with each other on socials such as karting and also ate together. There were also usually team socials where the whole team would go karting or bowling.
Standard prices for Bristol.
Bristol nightlife is good for Friday/Saturday nights
