The Role
No two days were the same on my placement. The employees I worked with and my manager all worked very hard to organise site visits for me and to engage me in the job role. The placement was very well structured, there were three visits to the office in London for intern events, and we were also encouraged to communicate with each other throughout our internships.
My colleagues definitely made me feel valued, routinely asking for my opinion and my thoughts on the job at hand. As well as this, they were also very keen to answer my questions and improve my understanding of the role.
My manager and the other employees I worked with were always easy to contact for help and advice. I frequently worked with my manager, and this was a big part of my internship. Furthermore, I was also able to communicate easily with other employees with whom I routinely worked with, and they all supported and guided me throughout the internship.
Most days of the week I would be on at least one site visit each day. This kept me busy with writing reports, researching businesses and completing my assigned projects. Only rarely did I find myself with no work to complete, but I can say that my manager did his best to make sure my time was filled with tasks to complete.
I could have been given more responsibility and maybe more projects to complete. But I was given responsibility to complete these projects independently so this was welcomed. I also felt that my projects were valued by the company, and did have a purpose, and I feel this is a key point to make.
The experience of a wide variety of businesses and engineering environments have given me a good appreciation of working in industry and will definitely aid in me gaining a full year placement in industry next year. My projects and presentations greatly honed my communication skills and boosted my confidence, as well as grew my professionally as a person and employee.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was relaxed and very easy to feel comfortable and welcome in. Employees made me feel included and a part of the company. And showed interest in getting to know me throughout the internship.
My work schedule was always completed and prepared the week before, due to the nature of the work this is a difficult task and must be commended. Very rarely we're plans changed last minute and this was always due to circumstances out of the company's control.
The company gave me real responsibility in my projects, and this in hand showed they were keen to know and understand my opinion on the subject matter. My manager gave me numerous one to one talks in which they checked how I felt the internship was goin and also discussing what I had learned and experienced.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Above 25 days holiday
Travel loan
Whilst the company is not in an industry I had previously considered working professionally for, the experience has definitely made me consider a more wide variety of options.
The Culture
Due to all the interns being spread across the country it made socialising difficult. But we did meet 3 times throughout the year.
Manchester is a cheap student city with plenty to do.
Manchester has a fantastic nightlife due to the amount of students, even during the summer months.
I feel this is an area that could've been improved, but only in the sense that the company could have prompted the interns more to complete activities outside of work. I do not feel that it is the company's responsibility to organise such events.
