About You
Really enjoyed working with BDO. Everyone was very kind and supportive to me and was levelled into the work, despite not knowing any sort of accountancy before! I met a lot of great people, and had an amazing time working on clients / audits, as well as having a lot of fun during the socials that BDO set up for us!
Was very much treated as a trainee, so I had to handle review points on my work and constructive criticism on work, but made me much better as an individual. I also was sent out to clients a lot, and not even mentioned that I was an intern which made me feel very important! I was also booked by other staff, which made me valued again.
We had a week in Birmingham with all the other interns, which was very helpful! We did sort of simulations of audits, which also gave me the right mindset on what to upset when going out to clients. Every staff looked out for me i felt also. I never felt i was totally left in the dark, not knowing what to do. And when i did struggle, I knew i could ask for assistance, without any issues.
The skills i learnt in week 1 was very good as a basis for working on audits, despite not studying any accountancy before. Alongside the support of the staff and colleagues, I feel i developed a lot more skills than i had imagine before ! I felt i slowly became independent in conducting audits as a trainee!
The Company
Really liked the program, and it was very clear! Plenty of socials and beneficial learning. The first 4 days, we learnt about audit as well as being involved in charity fundraising during our internship programme. The last few days we were sent to London, for a sort of review and to finish off the internship with a lot of fun. In terms of work, we were scheduled even before we arrived. Also with the timetable, we knew exactly when we were out of office and who to contact for information regarding those clients.
The atmosphere of the office was very young , with many graduates and school leavers. This made it for me, so much more comfortable, knowing im working alongside many people my own age, such that we mutually can relate to each other. The environment generally was very warm, in that I knew i could ask anyone for help and they would provide assistance, regardless of my position.
They invested a lot of time and resources in us! Being sent to Birmingham for the first week, as well being given accommodation and the learning materials was fantastic. The staff who were conducting the sessions, were also fantastic in ensuring that all of us knew about what was going on, despite not have prerequisite knowledge.
We were treated like proper trainees, so we were sent to clients and always helping out within the office on ongoing audits that the office were undertaking. I especially enjoyed my audit where i was out for 1.5 weeks, being a part of a team of 4 in taking charge of several key audits and providing these to our manager who gave us constructive criticism to work and improve upon.
Being there for 6 weeks, I was definitely able to understand a lot about the company culture. I learnt a lot about the people of the office, as well as their monthly socials which included an open fridge at the end of every month, and a dress down day to provide money for charitable causes. The emphasis on client service by BDO, was also reflected in the support that each staff member gives. Especially for me, since i was new. It gave me confidence to make sure what i did with clients, was clear and of excellence.
There was absolutely no pressure on me to instantly take the career of auditing. They always provided these opportunities and experiences to me, as well as training of an auditor, but these are easily transferable skills which will help me for a lifetime. It was also great in that I was given a small talk with many different people from different departments, such as tax and corporate finance, so that I get a real insight into what other possible positions are out there.
Everything Else
I was given accommodation for when all the interns were sent to London and Birmingham for training / the end, which was great! We were also covered for travel costs to these cities, but also were allowed to claim expenses on travel to client sites which was a very warming offer from them. We were also paid throughout the internship experience.
We were treated just as trainees, so we were very comfortably allowed within the office and get involved with other staff members, both during work as well as outside of work. Additionally, we networked with staff from other departments in our office, like tax and internal auditing which was a fantastic opportunity. Furthermore, we met with all the interns during the first week and the last. Communicating with each other was very easy, and to know if we will be working with each other in the future!
It was good! I was able to meet with a lot of different people at my Office and from different departments. There was also opportunity towards the end of our internship, to network with people from the London office which was great also. Birmingham likewise, during our socials which was a great experience, as talking to them outside the office seemed much more comfortable.
We were instantly told through emails and messages about many opportunities that BDO offer! In particular, they have a football tournament for all UK offices. This was very fun in meeting staff but also the other interns over the lovely sport. Also I learnt about all the great socials and parties that the office plan and was even invited to one of the end of audits dinner, despite only being a part of the audit for 1.5 weeks of it!
Definitely ! Its made my summer so much more exciting and worthwhile. You learn so many skills but make so many friendships and network with likeminded students, in your own very exact position. Even if I found that audit wasnt for me, there was little pressure and great advice and non-bias information about other opportunities within this field from the company!
