The Role
I really enjoyed the 1 month internship with KPMG. I felt that the work was always different and varied and I was able to acquire a good range of skills. I got a good overview of the business as a whole and what it would be like to work there full time.
All the team were really nice at KPMG, and everybody that I met made the effort to introduce themselves and make me feel welcome. Due to the nature of the job, I didn't spend much time with the same people as people were in different offices and on different sites everyday.
For each project I worked on I felt very able to ask questions and seek guidance from the project manager. My manager was also very supportive and took the time to catch up with me on several occasions. I was also given a buddy who was always there to answer questions and provide support.
On the whole, I was relatively busy but the workload was always manageable. There were some days where I would be working constantly throughout the day. However, there were also a few days where I wasn't really on a specific project, and on those days I was able to use my time doing online training or researching the company.
Due to the nature of the job, there wasn't that much responsibility awarded to me. This was because most of the work was either technical or very client facing, however, I was always able to go to client meetings and on client sites and I often took minutes. I was able to do quite a number of tasks from within the office though.
I definitely acquired more of a skill of time management, which will be useful for the rest of my career. However, the main skill I think I developed was the ability to network and communicate with clients and other colleagues.
The Company
I worked between the Manchester and the Leeds office during my time at KPMG. The atmosphere was friendly in the office and everyone was always very approachable. There weren't many events held outside of the workplace, but I think this was partly due to the time of the year as a lot of staff were on holiday.
I think on the whole the placement was set up well. I think it would have been useful to gain more information in the induction as to what we would be doing for the rest of the placement, as it was quite daunting arriving at the office on the first day. I think more of a breakdown of the teams and what the area we were going into specifically does would have been very useful.
There was a 1 day induction in London that told us more about the company. I then had the opportunity to sign up for training courses and do a number of online training modules on things that interested me. My main training and development came from on the job tasks and my colleagues providing me with information.

Working from home
At the end of the internship I had to have a final interview with someone from within the firm. This took into account your whole experience at KPMG and consisted of a presentation and interview questions. I then heard back within a month that I had been offered a job after finishing my degree.
The Culture
There weren't many social events amongst colleagues during the time I was at KPMG. However, there were a few fellow intern events such as networking drinks in the first week of my placement. In my final week we were also taken bowling and for some food to meet other interns in different departments.
As I was only there for a few weeks I didn't really get involved in any activities outside of work, however from speaking to other people I think there was definitely a large number of activities to get involved in. There were also a lot of different societies and events you could sign up to, and there were advertised on internal emails regularly
