The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the work and the practical applications of what I was doing. Work was slow and not very practical, which is more appealing to me for a job.
Extremely, I felt like all the work I did was important and of use to the term. I felt completely included and respected by the team.
Constant support, there was always somebody to ask for help even if my supervisor was not available. I always felt able to approach any of the team and that my supervisor would regularly check in with me and offer support.
The day would be split between my work and various meetings. I had up to three projects running at one time but was never pressured, if I felt the work was too much I could slow down. Likewise if I had hardly anything to do I felt I could ask for more. There was a good balance of work load and personal time.
I was responsible for my own work and projects. Apart from this there was not much opportunity for responsibility with the work I carried out. Outside of work I was responsible for myself, travel, accommodation, break times and lunch ect.
Greatly, I learnt the benefit of a structured working day, organising my time more efficiently and working out what works for me. Technically, I have developed my problem solving skills and report writing, having the opportunity to issue my own report during the placement. Also, personally I have developed my communication skills and relationship building in a professional environment.
The Company
Quiet at times but social, the office was open plan and friendly.
Quite well, the nature of my work was not confined to strict time scales making organisation a lot easier.
Everyday I was learning from other professionals and gaining experience this way. Apart from specific induction training i did not receive further training but I feel I gained a lot from working along side professionals.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Very appealing, I will apply for the graduate scheme in September. The company is somewhere I could see myself working in the future.
The Culture
For other placement students, yes! however I did not meet any. The time of my placement fell in-between year long placement cross over so as I started they left and as I left the new cohort began. There was also not much of a social scene with my colleagues.
Pretty normal, cheaper than living in London. Travel was quite expensive out of the south west.
Not the best. Coming from Liverpool and Sheffield I'm used to busy nightlife but there was not much going on in Gloucester. I did travel to Bristol which I loved as a city, day and night.
There were a lot of activity groups, mostly exercise groups which ran outside of work. I was invited to a team BBQ in the summer, however there was not much for me outside of work, apart from the gym.
