The Role
I really enjoyed working at EDF. From the time I was introduced to the team, I started to fit in. Training was okay, but rather dull and tedious, however it didn't take long to complete. I was granted to computer access a week into my placement.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. They were always about to try to take me out on plant or giving me stuff to read to further my understanding of the plant. Everyone I met was very friendly as was welcoming.
My manager, Brian, was very welcoming. he was quick at getting me work to do and involved into the team. He was always available to talk to if I was stuck with my work or needed more work to do.
I found that for the first 3 weeks, I didn't have a loads to do, mostly training and getting used to the ropes. The middle 6 weeks were really busy. The last 3 weeks as work was winding down, I was not as busy as i could have been.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility. I was given tasks at the start to complete over the course of my internship. They were important to the company do felt like I was really achieving things that would benefit the company.
I have learned a lot more about the world of work. I feel better prepared to be more professional. I feel that I have been given more experience to be able to work better at university.
The Company
They made sure I had good experience. They let me be part of a project which needed to head to another station. I went for an overnight to Lancaster for a visit to Heysham 2 power plant. It was for a meeting with other system engineers to help solve a problem.
The Culture
There was a group that I sat with at lunch, they were all young graduates or other placements. They organised to do things weekly. The played badminton, and when the Edinburgh festival was on, we would go and see shows. The group changed quite a lot as graduates come and go.
Dunbar is a very small town. Although Edinburgh is very close. The nightlife in Dunbar is very limited, there are a few pubs on the high street, during the weekdays there is limited people in them. During the weekends the pubs are full of the locals.
