The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and enjoyed being challenged to work hard while learning quickly.
I was responsible for many tasks and sometimes would work with my colleagues to complete tasks sheets, risk assessments and method statements as well as working through my technical competencies.
I worked closely with the Project Manager at Tottenham Court Road and asked to work in the tunnels. Anything I wanted to learn about was accommodated for during my placement, or I was pointed in the right direction of who to ask.
I was always busy from the first day till my last day there. Although I was busy, my tasks were manageable and sometimes challenging.
I had a lot of responsibility to deliver my work on time. From setting out on site to collecting As Built data and working on documentation in the office. I also attended many meetings and had input to weekly programmes and show my progress with tasks.
Extensively. I am currently working a design proposal for the Bakerloo Line Extension at university. My work at Tottenham Court Road ties into what I'm working on. The knowledge I've gained from my summer placements have set me up to be successful during my final year at university and for my future career aspirations in construction.
The Company
Everyone I met at the Tottenham Court Road office was very helpful and engaging. They wanted to answer all my questions and get me working through a wide range of typical engineering tasks.
The Laing O'Rourke Summer Placement Scheme has been running for several years now, and you can see that it has improved year after year. The weekly conference calls from industry experts were highly insightful and engaging.
Laing O'Rourke provided weekly conference calls for summer placement students (Cadets) from industry experts within their company. The talks were about current industry problems or innovations such as Digital Modelling. They also provide Competencies that Cadets have to work through. These range from activities on site and in the office to learning about company procedures or heath and safety requirements.

I have been offered a place on the Graduate scheme in 2017 when I finish my MEng.
The Culture
We would often go to the pub on Fridays to socialise. There is also a LinkedIn group for Cadets and graduate employees.
I already live in London. Transport was subsidised to and from work.
I already live in London where I had my placement.
