Summer Intern Review

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Cushman and Wakefield. Not only was the work varied and interesting, but I was also given the opportunity to attend various networking events. As the work was new to me I could tell that I was learning every day, which is invaluable to any intern.

From day one, the team was welcoming and willing for me to get involved in their current projects. After spending time in another part of the property industry, I acknowledged that they were interested in what I knew and whether it could be of help.

My supervisor was great in guiding me and introducing me to other people in the firm. Unfortunately, my supervisor had just come back from holiday when I joined and understandably was incredibly busy.

The team always had some work for me to do. I was willing to get involved and always asked around whenever my work had freed up. I was given a diverse range of work, where one minute I might be compiling something relatively important, like marketing particulars or attending a client meeting, to something less important such as organising brochures for one of the agents.

I think it is reasonable to consider that a summer intern isn't going to be given too much responsibility. Every piece of work that I compiled was checked over before being submitted, which is understandable. An example is how I was given the opportunity to create my own property requirement on the Agency system, which goes out to other firms. From there I would answer phone calls and relay any general questions back to the agents.

Joining a firm which is the size of Cushman and Wakefield is always going to provide you with some relevant skills. The internship gave me an insight into the workings of another area of the property profession and has broadened my outlook on the industry. Attending client meetings is an example of an aspect which can only be learnt through experience and fortunately I was given that opportunity at C & W.

The office was generally quiet, and I suppose it could be improved with some more collaboration between the different departments. I was told that there had been a recent office move for my team, due to the merger with DTZ.

I felt that the internship was set up very well by HR. I was given a clear indication of which team I would be joining, which I was delighted with as I had suggested them at the interview. The interview and assessment centre was well planned and I was given flexibility as to my start date for the internship which was helpful.

There were no specific training and development workshops, however, my firm did enough to explain to me what was required of me alongside an explanation of the work that they carried out. The team welcomed any questions which was useful.

On the back of my internship, I was offered a position on the Graduate Scheme.

There was more of a social scene amongst the colleagues. In the agency team, I think it is standard practice to go down to the pub on a Friday. I met other members of the office through an annual networking event held by the firm. I met another intern by chance in the office.

I travelled to and from work by train which was expensive, but the wage offered more than covered this expenditure. I was working in Birmingham, and the socialising was never too expensive.

Not particularly. It was fortunate that an annual cricket match was held whilst I was working, yet there were no other activities that were held.
