The Role
I really enjoyed my summer placement with Laing O'Rourke company. I had brilliant opportunity to learn from graduate engineers, from site/sections engineers, form senior engineers and project engineer. I was able to see the difference between every engineering rolls. I had to chance to work with digital engineers and was shown how digital engineering works.
During summer placemat I had brilliant/amazing colleagues. They always was willing to help for me and give advice. They always made sure that I knew what I am doing and they gave me opportunity to show what I am capable to do. I knew if I can't to do the task I can go and ask them and they will help me. They spend a lot of time teaching extra stuff. We all build great relationships during summer placement. And I was confident working with them.
My supervisors where great, as well my line manager. I had great support during summer. All the questions was explain. Even the most simples ones. All the questions was taken serious. Even if I couldn't understand the simplest things - I was explained them. My colleagues and supervisors spend extra time explaining extra stuff I wanted to know. Team was really supportive.
I had perfect balance during my summer placement. I was shown what role site engineer has and shown how to act/what to do in site engineer role. I had chance to work with concrete and understand the importance of it. Had a chance to learn how to use AutoCad. Was introduced and had a chance to do task sheets and method statements. Was introduced to other paper work the engineers has to do. Learned about slump/flow tests and then meaning and importance. The most time I was setting up on the site. Leaned how to use the most machines on the site.
During summer placement I was given quit a lot of things to do. The engineers gave me a chance to show what I can do. I had a chance to do setting out every day. In the end of the placement I was staying alone on the site, as I was able to set out alone. Had a chance to be responsible for concrete and cubes, as well fill the document for them-Histograms. In the beginning of placement I learn how to use AutoCad and during summer I started to do As-Builts. In the end of summer one of the engineers took over them from me. Had a opportunity to do handover papers for the floors. As well was shown and did few task sheets and method statements. Was handling the precast inspections for the tower block. I was given a brilliant opportunity to work on community garden project. This project gave me amazing opportunity to think outside the box as engineer, as well I saw what challenges engineers faces.
The skills I learned gave me understanding about engineers roles. Now when I am studying I can applying exercise questions to real life experience. It's easier to visualise the questions given in the text book. As well I know what to expect for next year placement. I gained communication skills and gained more confidence in myself and skills I have. I leaned how to work in teams and how to communicate with people.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great every day. In the site office I always had great fun. Always was able to chat with the colleagues during the break time. The guys always was with the smile. In the main office, across the road, I always felt welcome. Every time you coming they says hello and has conversation. I could say the fun never stopped in the office. The team was great and fun.
The placement was organise well for me. I had a chance to experience a little bit of everything. From working on site to doing paper work in the office. The weekly conference calls sessions helped to learn more about different projects and difference roles (e.g. Digital engineering)
I didn't receive any extra training, however I had weekly conference calls to introduce me to company work.
I would love to stay with the company after the graduation and receive the offer for graduate program.
The Culture
I had great opportunity meet the rest of the students. We had Great opportunity to work together as the team. As well we had a chance to hang out and meet each other and get to know each other.
I was living at home and had a chance to socialise.
I didn't got involve in any activities outside of work.
