The Role
The placement was very enjoyable - I was given a project and also shadowed a senior underwriter. Half way through the placement I started writing business and trading with brokers, so I was given a lot of responsibility which was great.
Everyone made me feel very welcome and was very supportive.
I had great support from all the senior management in the office, as well as a senior underwriter who was my manager for the course of the internship. My manager was keen to help me get a foot into the business and supported my application for a graduate role.
I was always busy with work to do. I was given two projects to keep me going, as well as technical underwriting guides to work through. I was also supporting a senior underwriter, providing quotes for him and even allocated my own workload of quotes.
Lots of responsibility - personally trading with brokers and having a personal allocation of quotes to get on cover.
Seen the internship I have started a full time graduate role - the internship has provided an invaluable insight into the company, underwriting and insurance more generally. When I started my full time role I was able to go straight into having an allocation of work as I had already got a basic understanding developed whilst interning.
The Company
Atmosphere was great - it is a trading focused office so has a good buzz. There were also other activities going on which provided a good chance to meet colleagues from other teams.
On my first day my manager gave me a personal development training plan. It was a plan of everything he wanted me to achieve. For my first two weeks, meetings and training days were organised for me which was great when entering a new environment.
I basically had a mentor (my manager) for the whole 9 weeks who whenever I had a question, or wanted to go through a quote then he was available. He also drew up a development plan and sat opposite me, so was very approachable.

I have got a job with them and started a couple of months ago as I have now graduated.
The Culture
Yes there was a good social scene. We often went out for lunch and there are regular nights out if you are up for it.
Relatively cheap.
We got the train into London for nights out - although it was only a 25 minute train away so not too bad.
Yes, there are sport activities amongst other things
