The Role
I enjoyed the majority of my placement and generally looked forward to coming into work.
I was highly valued by my colleagues and was made to feel welcome by all.
My line manager and other work colleagues were supportive throughout. They didn't mind taking time out of their own work to help and were always happy to answer any questions I had .
The work balance varied depending what was happening on site that day. Busy and quiet periods.
I was given an appropriate amount of responsibility, I was able to complete tasks independently and people trusted my output but not expected to compete tasks I felt uncomfortable undertaking.
The site experience has helped me understand topics covered in lectures as I've had first hand experience of it on site and the training has improved my technical skills (e.g. surveying practices). Most helpful of all was the insight into different job roles and the construction industry.
The Company
Generally relaxed with opportunities to interact and socialise but also busy
The placement was generally well organised and flexible. The scheduling was accommodating if there was a particular department or activity i wanted to gain experience in.
The company provided all the training and support necessary to complete my job and the colleges I worked with were happy to offer advice on career paths etc.
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
Travel loan
Very appealing; from my summer placement I have been sponsored for my second year of study and automatically considered for a year in industry placement next year
The Culture
Often socialised outside of work for birthdays etc, often invited to drinks after work etc
The cost of socialising was not a problem, wasn't put of social events due to the cost. As i commuted in from home the cost of living in the area I worked in didn't apply to me.
