The Role
The best year of my life so far! Each and everyday i spent in the office would become more exciting than the last. As the months flew past, I was given more responsibility allowing me to experience different aspects of the organisation.
From day 1 I completely felt I was a vital member of the team Throughout my training weeks i would receive plenty of emails that i would need to action before the end of the day, so other members of the team could then complete their section - never did i feel like i was given jobs for the sake of my time in the office.
I can't thank my manager enough, she was always there for me to develop my skills during my time at HP regardless of the questions i had. I think i can speak on the behalf of all the interns in saying that no one in this organisation is inaccessible, everyone is willing to help regardless of their status.
Busy would be an understatement at times! At first it may seem very overwhelming with the level of work you are given on a daily basis as i was constantly receiving emails with other jobs to do - but everyone was very helpfully in taking other jobs on in order to help - but i felt this was a great way to learn even more and so quickly. All i would say is a good planning regime is essential is staying on top of your work and making sure your stress levels are retained.
From Day 1 you do not feel like an intern but a permanent member of staff, but I feel this is defiantly the best way to learn! One of my main roles from the start was being in charge of all the email communications sent out to the UK.
I have learnt so much during my time at HP that i can't wait to start my final year and future jobs to apply it even further. I have tried to keep a list of everything i have achieved that i am proud of so i can speak about it in future job interviews and put it on my CV, but i have learnt and achieved so much working in such a changing environment that it will be hard to only select a couple.
The Company
All employees work in an open plan environment which made you feel extremely welcome from the start. As i have said before everyone regardless of their status is always accessible and willing to help in any possible way. A lot of the employees were interns themselves and therefore completely relate and encourage you to take on any opportunity given to you.
I couldn't thank the old intern I replaced enough. Very soon after you are given your opportunity information is sent out to you and calls are arranged so you are able to ask all the questions you felt you were unable to ask in your interview. Moving away and having to find somewhere to live was one of the things i thought i was going to struggle with the most - however this was already thought about by HP. Interns were advised that we could get reduced rates at the university of reading halls for the first 2 months, allowing us to get to know the other interns on placement with you at that time and to organise accommodation for the future months. I think this also allowed us to get to know each other really well which definitely made my placement even more enjoyable.
I think this depends a lot on how pro active you are and want to develop throughout the year. Interns are given endless opportunities to develop further and HP definitely encouraged us all to take on as many as possible. I would therefore say that HP certainly recognised the importance of investing time and resources for interns to develop.

Very appealing! Having had the opportunity of experiencing only 1 year within HP and achieving and learning so much i would definitely explore future employment prospects within this organisation. The passion and culture within the organisation is something i would definitely see myself embracing further.
The Culture
Many current HP employees were interns themselves and therefore understand how we felt. During my time, HP had 20 interns which meant there was always something to do!
Whilst my placement opportunity was in Bracknell the head office of HP, I chose to live with other interns just outside of the town centre of Reading. Being so close to London was definitely also a benefit - less than 30 mins by train.
Being a student town there were plenty of options and for all tastes and preferences at decent prices!
Most definitely! From sports clubs to charity events and personal challenges i tried to get involved in activities i wouldn't get the opportunity to take at university or by myself. One of the most appealing activities was the 3 peak challenge - something i was always keen to do but never had the opportunity in the past.
