    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was very enjoyable, from the first day until the last everyone was more than willing to help with whatever would make my internship more rewarding. The wide array of things to do and people to meet mean you'll never have a dull time.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Having no experience in the industry your first week on a new job will always make you feel like you're not really contributing, but with a little bit of effort once you pick up the basics you really can provide a massive boost to your team and they will let you know exactly how much you're helping.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Management were great, not only with formal processes like guidance and counselling but also really approachable and easy to talk to about anything.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As busy as I made myself, I would always be started off with a decent amount of work, but I could manage it in as timely a manner as I wanted, I always finished earlier than expected and asked for further work so I was very busy but happy to take on the extra responsibility.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are required to talk to clients and deal with parts of the audit process but nothing of high risk will be given to you. EY do a great job of making you an important part of the team whilst also giving you tasks that are beneficial to both you and the completion of a project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have learnt are invaluable, it was a completly different experience to any I have had before and was also different to what I expected. As is obvious it is a good amount of number crunching and paperwork but the opportunities and people at the office mean that the work you do feels relevant and rewarding.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Quiet, hard working throughout most of the day, but friendly and approachable at all times. Happy to help and happy to discuss anything. Applies to all staff from 1st years to Managers. Social events were frequent enough and the ability to celebrate special occasions or other events with work colleagues was abundant. All of the staff members were so friendly and helpful that you really felt that you could ask for anything reasonable and the company could work around you (to an extent).

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fantastic, jobs were prepared in advance and contacts established before the programme even began. Staff members more than happy to answer questions and help with logistics including transport accommodation and other requirements. Structured well to include all aspects of the audit process as well as different teams and locations. Start of internship especially well structured with good introduction session and welcome to the company.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Training mostly consisted of on the job learning, asking colleagues about practices and the correct way to do things is essential, the staff are more than willing to explain fundamentals of the process and help with any specifics that are relevant to your work, but there is no formal introduction to the technical side of the job given by management. As such you are thrown in the deep end slightly, and it can be a daunting but rewarding experience.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was offered a job with EY a few weeks after the process ended, they've been great throughout the whole process about keeping me informed of the future job prospects as well as informing me of what to expect in a graduate role with EY. The staff were more than helpful in giving their experiences with the role and answered all of my questions regarding the position. Having been through the interview process for the internship, this was not required for the graduate role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • My fellow placement students were fairly social with each other whenever we were in the same office. Most of the placement is spent outside of the main office and not with other interns so meeting regularly is difficult. Through projects and flexibility within our jobs we shared a few lunches together, went out for drinks after work a few times and generally got on very well with each other.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was not actually living in Bristol, the city in which the office was placed, but with my parents about 45 minutes away. However I have heard from other people that the rent prices are reasonable and accommodation is generally of a high quality and value for money. Bristol generally has a lot of expensive pubs and bars but if you know where to look it can be a really great place to be, it has a very young urban scene and attracts a great number of people for good reason.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I personally didn't experience the nightlife in Bristol, I heard from colleagues that it was decent, being the home of Universities you can expect the nightlife to be of a high standard. There are an ample amount of clubs, bars and pubs to explore and I'm sure there will be other interns itching to try it out.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • During the introduction the EY team introduce you to several opportunities to help out with a vast range of out of work schemes, to fundraising for local charities and the EY foundation to joining one of the groups within the company that help to promote and encourage a diverse way of working. You are given a lot of options to help not only the company but yourself outside of normal working hours.
