The Role
I enjoyed my internship immensely. I did not come from an accounting background so this internship gave me an insight into what it would be like working for EY in assurance. Not to mention we were supported constantly by everyone so I never felt out in left field, and the work was challenging and stimulating.
I felt really valued by my colleagues. Everyone was always ready to help and happy to answer my questions. I was with pretty much the same people for the whole 6 weeks so I got to know everyone really well. My manager even awarded me with an EY values award and a gift voucher so I was very happy and felt appreciated.
As an intern essentially everyone on my team was my supervisor and they were all ready to answer any questions I may have and help me. They also gave me more challenging work once I completed a set of tasks, which really helped develop my understanding and knowledge of what I was doing in audit.
Some days were a little slower than others, but for the most part I was busy helping out with various odds and ends that the team needed me to do and if I ran out of stuff everyone always had something else for me to work on so I would say I was never bored.
As interns not a whole lot of responsibility is given to us as we don't have all the technical skills needed yet. However, we are given as much responsibility as we felt we can handle. For example, I was put in charge of a 'tracker' that kept track of our progress on our client project.
I learned a lot about myself from this internship and what it is like working in the 'real-world' outside of university. I can't say it really helped me in my degree as I don't study accounting, but the interpersonal and communication and planning and organisational skills I learned will stay with me forever.
The Company
As we were really busy on a client project at the time, everyone was busy working and didn't talk but that was fine as we played music in the background and ate lunch together, etc. so it was good.
I was lucky because I was allocated on a team that kept me busy, but some other interns didn't have a lot of work to do so I would say that it wasn't completely organised in the fact that everyone who was an intern always had work to do.
There is only so much you can learn in 6 weeks, but I did learn a lot about how the firm's software works and Excel, and I did take some training courses, which will be useful the I join as a graduate.
Subsidised Canteen
I received a graduate offer which I happily accepted.
The Culture
It really depends on what you make it. Some people went out and socialised and others just went home after work. All of us were spread out across clients so meeting up at a designated spot and time was difficult, but if you wanted to you could make it work. You put in what you get out.
London is expensive. I don't know what else to say.
I don't care much for going out but London has great nightlife, or so I hear.
There are tons--EY has so many societies and events that any employee, even interns can join. I want to join some when I return as a graduate.
