The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed it! My team were friendly and everyone was approachable when I needed help or even when I was just curious about a particular process or industry relating to our team. I went on a couple or informal and organised socials with my team which were a lot of fun. The recruitment team only organised a social for the interns in the first week and half-way through, so something at the end of our placement would have been fun, nonetheless we organised something ourselves.
Very much so! I was regularly given feedback on my work and was often invited to meetings purely for my insight, as well as to those related to my assigned projects. For one day of the internship I had to be in another city for a hospital appointment. The team accommodated my request to visit the local office while I was away, and put me in touch with team members over there so I that had projects work on.
Anyone that I was ever doing work directly for was always very approachable, and preferred that I asked questions rather than doing something wrong. When I expressed my preference to get experience in different areas within Reward, my councillor helped me arrange time with different teams. However, more communication with Recruitment throughout the internship would have been helpful.
I rarely stopped! The team were always busy so appreciated any support I could give to their projects, so I had to manage time and expectations so that I could deliver on all that I had committed to. I was always asked if I had capacity to take on more work before being given it. A slower pace may have been more comfortable but it was manageable, and any time that I stayed late was my own decision to maximise my breadth of experience by accepting more work, rather than pressure from others.
I was never directly responsible for any particular project, which is understandable as an intern. However, there were smaller tasks within projects that I was solely responsible for, and projects would have been delayed had I not delivered on these.
The people skills I developed will be useful. The ability to communicate positively and efficiently with a team that are constantly balancing priorities, while remaining professional is an essential skill in any profession or study. The tax knowledge I gained will not help in my degree but will of course be useful when I return to Deloitte as a graduate!
The Company
People worked hard and for long hours. The team were friendly over lunchtime, on the way to/from meetings, and people did chat more if they were staying late, but the team were very focused on their work throughout the day. Although, everyone was helpful and interested in each other's lives outside of work.
Opportunities weren't always handed to me on a plate, but when I sought some/more experience in a certain area within GES, it was usually accommodated.
People were always quick to explain the context of the work I was going to do for them which was helpful. I was also given tax booklets to get some more background on the nature of work in the team I was in.

Excellent. In my opinion Deloitte have have the best graduate programme for anyone looking to begin a career in Tax Consulting, and I have accepted an offer to start on their next one!
The Culture
We had to make an effort to stay in touch - finding each other on the internal messaging service, making a whatsapp group etc. As mentioned before, there were few socials organised for the interns.
It was more expensive than in regional parts of the country, but I think most are aware that the living costs is a sacrifice that one has to make to live in the capital. That said- there are cheap places around if you do your research or have knowledgeable friends!
There were several bars on the ground floor of the Deloitte campus. Of course, there are countless bars and clubs across the city. Our team went to a Karaoke bar one night!
Our team had a sports afternoon one day, where we went to Hyde Park to play rounders before heading to some bars. The team also have free drinks in the office lobby once a month. I was told that there were a few sports teams but I didn't investigate these in my time there.
