The Role
I had an amazing experience during my time at Deloitte. I was not only made to feel like part of the firm from the very first day, but I was given endless opportunities to improve my own abilities and succeed. No matter what interest you might have, I was always some say as to what kind of projects I wanted to be on so. That also means that I had the opportunity to try a lot of new projects in industries that I would not thought of.
Regardless of whether you are a full time graduate, a summer placement student or a year long placement student, you are treated the exact same way and have access to the same opportunities. Most projects that you will undertake tends to be in teams and regardless of what grade you are, your opinions are always valued.
You are given an appraiser that will help guide and support you to achieve the goals and targets you set yourself during your time at the firm. At every project or task you are given, it is also very clear on who you can reach out to that can support you whenever you are troubled.
This varies from project to project, but on most projects time is a very precious commodity and as a result you are normally driven to complete tasks and objectives in a timely manner. This has also resulted in opportunities to help the team even when you had nothing on for yourself.
Responsibility at Deloitte, as with any other setting, is earned by proving your capability to deliver. During my time on a testing project, I proved that I was capable of delivering on time and with a certain level of quality. I was eventually given the role of test lead for a portion of the project which had a total of 100 over employees. I was also training two 2nd year consultants before I left the project.
Deloitte's consulting practice provides all starters that are due to stay with the firm for than 10 months a 6 week training programme that includes the new graduates that join the firm. This is prepares you for all the various projects that you are eventually going to be on and gives you an understanding of the firm and what it is like to be a consultant. On top of this, Deloitte offers a huge range of training courses which you can take at any point. This ranges from professional qualifications to internal training or even a course at the Deloitte university in Brussels.
The Company
Deloitte is one of the biggest consulting firms in the world, a market leader and operates internationally. This has resulted in creating an environment that operates at the highest level. You work with some of the brightest minds in the labour force and since it operates internationally, you also have people from all walks of life and a wide range of cultures to create a dynamic and vibrant work place. The Deloitte's technology consulting practice in particular has always been at the cutting edge of the industry. This has cultivated a culture of being different and constantly thinking outside the box. This then leads to a creative atmosphere which continues to foster that culture.
From day one you are told about a pathway that has been designed and tweaked over many years for the graduate and placement programme. This pathway is similar to a checklist of suggested objectives you should meet during your year and also gives you an outline of how your year will be organised. There is also a dedicated placement team, which is usually comprised of people who did placements before at Deloitte or management level staff that is supporting the scheme
As mentioned before you are given a 6 week training programme from the day you start. You are also enrolled into taking the British Computing Society qualification. Outside of the compulsory training, you are also encouraged to take courses that are being offered all year long, some are one off week long training and some are longer.

Working from home
Most if not all of the people you go on placement with will be offered a job. They have invested a lot in you and as long as you show that you are interested in the industry, a hard worker and capable at working and delivering at a high level, you are more than likely to receive an opportunity there.
The Culture
There is probably a social event for all occasions every other day every week throughout the year. Deloitte wants to promote integration within its firm and as a result has created some of the best social events. From having drinks evening on top of tower bridge, to away days in the countryside for team building activities, there will be events for everyone. This is not even including the team events most big projects have.
I was based in the Belfast office which had very low cost of living but I worked in London for the past 10 months which will be more expensive. But travel cost are always covered and you are given an allowance for food as well.
The Deloitte Belfast office and London office both have fantastic nightlife. Apart of the various activities that the firm organises regularly, there is a huge variety of events and activities for everyone to take part in.
Similar to university, Deloitte has a huge range of societies that actively promote themselves. From sporting societies like the sailing club or running society, you have the multicultural network that organises events with other companies in the area. Beyond that, both Belfast and London has a lot to offer activities-wise.
