About You
I really enjoyed the insight. The people were great, we participated in a range of activities and I learn a huge amount about KPMG and about technology consulting. I developed my presentation skills, found the workshop on creating a personal brand particularly useful and enjoyed the rotation around the different areas of technology open to us.
I felt extremely valued considering it was an insight for first year undergraduate students. Those in charge were certainly trying to impress us as much as we were trying to impress them. We were reimbursed for all our travel expenses and it was a paid internship although only one of the days we were there were actually spent working. Some of the employees/partners that came to speak to us were of the highest level so I certainly felt valued.
There was a huge amount of guidance and support. Charlotte and Hannah wanted us to feel very welcome and comfortable to say what was on our minds. We were encouraged to ask questions and told there was no such thing as a stupid question. It quickly became quite a relaxed atmosphere and the guidance we were given in terms of developing our skills was really helpful.
We had a number of extremely useful workshops. We had a talk on presentation skills and were given tips to help us to improve before we put this into practice in activities. We were also taught the importance of making a good first impression and constructing a strong personal brand which will certainly be useful in later work. We took part in a number of case studies which taught us to be innovative and creative. All these things will be very helpful in future studies and beyond.
The Company
It was extremely well organised and each day was packed with activities. We were all given security passes, we knew where we needed to be and when. We were each issued with a laptop which was useful in our activities. I would say it was very well structured, especially considering it was the first time they were running this particular scheme.
It was slightly tense at first but became very relaxed very quickly and this remained true for most of the week until the assessment day. Even then, Charlotte tried to reassure us and lighten the mood. I felt comfortable asking questions and making contributions as we were encouraged to do so and this meant we were able to learn a huge amount about the firm in a relaxed setting.
They invested in us heavily. We took part in workshops to improve our presentation skills, our ability to make a good first impression and to help us to construct a personal brand. We were spoken to by some of the most senior individuals in the firm and certainly felt valued for this reason.
Part of our week was the assessment exercise and if we were successful, we would be offered a place on their four week summer internship programme in technology consulting. It was made very clear at the start of the week when this would be and what we needed to do to impress during the assessment.
We were given the chance to speak to such a variety of people, from graduates, placement year students, directors and partners. This meant we were given a huge number of different perspectives and could hear people's different experiences of the firm. Everyone was very friendly and willing to speak to us, even those not part of the programme, but simply employees on their lunch break!
It was enormously helpful in providing us with an insight into technology consulting as a career as we could hear about the different areas within this and how they differed. However, as it was clearly a technology focused programme, it was not so helpful for me in choosing a future career as I was not entirely convinced it was for me. It would also have been useful to gain more hands on experience and to carry out some work during shadowing days.
Everything Else
I think we were paid over £300 for the week which I thought was great considering we had not really carried out much work for them, apart from during the one day of shadowing. We were also reimbursed for our travel expenses which was great for me as this added up to a large amount.
Absolutely. We had a network session with a number of graduates where we were given tips on our applications and told about their experiences. We had a dinner which some very senior employees and partners attended. During my work shadow day, the team took me for lunch and so I was able to speak to a huge number of people. We also attended the quarterly drinks where again I met more great people.

From speaking to some employees, we heard about the different networks within the firm. It seemed to be a very sociable place, especially the team i was put in for the day of shadowing. The team members seem to be great friends and even the most senior people were willing to take time out and go to lunch. I think they also have a number of social events at the weekend
I would absolutely recommend this, even if you have not previously considered technology consulting as a career. You will learn so much and develop crucial skills which will help you wherever you go. KPMG is a great employer and it is really useful to witness their inclusive culture firsthand.
