The Role
Broadly speaking I did enjoy my internship. I felt the work I was given allowed me to make a positive contribution to the team and I was able to learn a lot about a possible career in tax and about KPMG as a firm.
I felt very valued by everyone on the team, (probably because I was doing all the little jobs that they didn't want to do themselves!). Everyone was really nice and friendly and also took the time to explain if I had any questions about the work or their experiences at KPMG
I never felt like I couldn't ask for help, however, there were times when I needed to use my own initiative for a number of tasks when there weren't many people in the office or if they were caught up in other client work. However, at the end of the internship I had a useful meeting with my mentor to discuss my progress and what skills I could improve and what they were impressed with.
It varied but I would say generally I wasn't very busy. I feel this was more to do with the fact I was in a small regional office over the summer, so there were fewer clients and many of them were on on holiday etc. Also if memebers of the team were on client site or on holiday themselves that obviously led to less work that they could give me.
Not much to be honest as very little of the work I was doing was directly delivered to the client.
My degree is in a completely different discipline to tax/accounting so I don't feel anything I have learnt will directly help me in my studies, however, I did learn a lot about how businesses work and greatly improved my commercial awareness which is useful in anything you go on to do. I feel I also improved my professional and interpersonal skills whilst meeting clients and working with different people everyday.
The Company
Queit. I was working in a small regional office with one other graduate and no other interns so there wasn't much of a social scene. Everyone was really nice, just that it was an older demographic and as everyone drives to work it meant there was little socialising after work as they all had to drive back home.
I thought it was quite well organised overall. In particular the three day induction in London to start the internship helped us to settle into the firm and covered the basic skills and knowledge we would need for the rest of our internship. I was paired up with a 'buddy' who was good at giving me varied work or helping me find more work if I wasn't very busy.
The firm paid for my travel expenses and a hotel in London during my three day induction which was really good. That was probably the best part of the internship being able to meet and socialise with the other KPMG interns from around the country. This training made the transition into the office much smoother and also gave me more confidence when presented with client problems.

I was offered a job in the London office after my final interview at the end of my internship.
The Culture
Yes at the London induction. No for the rest of my internship as I was the only Tax intern in my regional office and there was only one other graduate so there was very little socialising after work.
Cost of living is fairly expensive.
