The Role
My summer was throrughly enjoyable, and I was lucky to take part in some fascinating projects and gain valuable experience of working in the nuclear industry.
All of my colleagues were very welcoming and fully appreciated the work that I was doing for them.
For the large majority of my time there were people I could ask for advice on certain issues, but on the odd occasion I found myself stuck with nobody in the office that had previous experience of what I was working on.
I completed two projects while at Cavendish Nuclear. My first project required me to run various computer simulation that could sometimes take hours to complete, and in the early days of the placement I did not have much to do while this was happening. However, this did not amount to a large portion of my time there, and for the large majority of the placement I had constant work to do.
The two projects that I completed were "real" projects for external customers, and so a lot of responsibility was given to me.
I became familiar with MCNP transport code, something that I am sure I will use again in my career. In addition, I was required to give a presentation upon completion of my placement and in doing so developed my skills in this area.
The Company
The office had a very professional atmosphere, while being laid back enough to have jokes with colleagues. The ideal office environment in my opinion.
Very well organised. Managed to take part in a number of projects, see different areas within the company and how the company worked as a whole business unit.
I feel that Cavendish Nuclear invested a lot of time and money in me to ensure that I got the maximum amount out of my placement, and for that I am extremely grateful.

I would love to return to the company in the future.
The Culture
All placement students and graduates met up after work most weekends for drinks, and we played 5 a side football matches every Wednesday.
Since this placement was based in west Cumbria, rent prices were minimal and social activities likewise.
In Whitehaven, there were a few nice bars and pubs, not much in the way of nightclubs however.
5 a side football matches every week, trips to the beach/lake district and trips to the bowling alley.
