About You
Fantastic Open Day, one of the best I have been too. Taylor Wessing has an open and honest environment - it is not a facade to lure you in as in some other firms. The day includes the valuable opportunity to ask direct questions to partners and senior partners (& receive very honest responses)! The opportunity to speak to trainees in a relaxed environment was also fantastic.
A clear effort is made by all staff to engage with attendees all day, even though it is 'just an open day'. Graduate recruitment, partners and numerous trainees were accessible throughout the day. All were very friendly and approachable which creates a comfortable environment to discuss with them any queries or concerns you may have regarding the application process.
A wealth of guidance and support regarding how to approach applications, how to handle the stress of an assessment day and how to best perform in all parts of the application process. Regarding the group activity, what was expected from us was explained concisely and clearly, and the trainees who oversaw your group presentation preparation did let you get on with it.
The information provided regarding the application process, what to expect from a training contract etc. was completely candid, which is exactly what is needed when you are trying to absorb as much as possible in so little time. Further developed communication skills through networking and group presentation, team-working skills and how to deal with nerves before assessment days to name but a few!
The Company
Very well planned event, the timetable provided at the start of the day was closely followed (particularly useful after attending events where certain activities or tours/talks have been cut off or feel rushed due to poor time management). The day was not so packed in that you felt bombarded with information. Plenty of break opportunities which ensured that there was time to address any concerns you had regarding your application to grad recruitment privately and network with other attendees at the event.
Friendly and relaxed yet professional. This fostered an open and honest environment where it felt natural to ask questions to partners, recruitment, and converse with trainees. Trainees revealed a lot about the firm, it did not feel as though they had been forced to be there, they took a general interest in us and chatted about things beyond the legal field and applications.
Huge investment in attendees' personal training and development, evidence of which lay in the amount of time recruitment, etc. spent with us. Partners hopes for you as potential trainees and a long-term career at Taylor Wessing is apparent as the route from trainee to partner is discussed. The amount of effort put into ensuring you are best prepared for their application process is invaluable.
As stated above, very candid in terms of what the firm expects from you as an applicant and a trainee and what you should expect of them. This is included both pros and cons (i.e. con, international secondments are ad. hoc and cannot be guaranteed). The way in which we were addressed as potential future colleagues was unique.
The insight included sessions that told you more about the company culture than is just stated on the website and examples were given to make this resolute. The way in which we were treated and the time invested in us throughout the day was very revealing of the company's culture.
I am already very set on my career path, however, the insight day affirmed my decision that Taylor Wessing is one of my top choices of firms to work for. Hopefully, what I have learnt from the day and the people I have met will help me in achieving this. All of the attendees I had the opportunity to speak/work with seemed genuine and I would be more than happy to see them as future colleagues.
Everything Else
I live in London and have a student travel card, so it was not necessary for me to be reimbursed expenses. However, if need be, up to £60 of travel costs would have been reimbursed. No expenditure was required for the day as lunch, and numerous refreshments were provided.
Opportunities for networking and meeting trainees over lunch and for drinks at the end of the day. There were also opportunities to speak to the partners or graduate recruitment staff more privately if you so wished. There were also plenty of trainees available to speak to, the ratio of trainees to open day attendees meant that you really were able to engage with the trainees and speak to them directly rather than them having to address a big group of you.
Networking and social opportunities were plentiful considering the short amount of time we were there for. It really made a difference having a second opportunity to speak to trainees at end of the day drinks as well as over lunch. This was largely because once the assessed presentations were over the environment was much more relaxed and it felt much more social, with a focus on establishing relationships as opposed to getting as much information out of trainees as you can !
A very long list was given to us regarding the pro bono work and projects that you can get involved in once a trainee, i.e. Taylor Wessing Community. The trainees also informed us of some of the social activities that happen during the vac scheme and once you work at the firm. Am slightly less sure as to sports teams etc.
Absolutely, invaluable opportunity, so much information is available for your taking and is packed very efficiently into just one day. I also think the open day will hugely increase your chances with future applications to the firm, not just because of the information provided but because you can get a clear sense of how you would fit into the working environment. I have no doubt that the day was a true reflection of Taylor Wessing and was not just a 'show' to attract applicants.
