    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was mainly positive, when I had work to do it could be really enjoyable but I was let down by the fact that a lot of the time I didn't have any work to do. There were days were I would go in to the office to only be given about an hour's worth of work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The colleagues at my main office were really lovely and always eager to help me in any way they could. They put my in touch with various people from around the organisation to talk to me about potential opportunities in the organisation if they didn't think they could answer any of my questions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I received feedback on every piece of work that I submitted, and during each piece of work I found it fairly easy to get any support I needed. That being said, I didn't find many of the pieces of work too challenging outside of understanding technical jargon so not much support was needed overall.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I felt very let down by the small amount of work I was set. I understand that as an intern in the middle of the summer it might be hard to find work for me, but I spent hours on end trying to find more work or just killing time before the day ended. There were multiple occasions where my supervisors would pass me over to a new supervisor because I had completed all of their work and I would be unable to contact the new supervisor for work. I would have really appreciated some kind of ongoing project or a single point of contact who could help me fill my spare time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This varied largely from week to week, the vast majority of work was fairly simple but time-intensive. I was trusted to do some important work that involved briefing some senior team members, but I think as part of internships generally it's hard to give unproven members of staff lots of responsibility. Regardless of the level of responsibility in each job I felt very appreciated by my colleagues.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was pretty much left to my own devices when it came to learning new skills. It was nice to be set challenges with software that I had never been used before and it was up to me to approach each problem as I wished. The internship gave me a push when it came to learning some very transferable skills and the occasional support from experienced colleagues will prove to be very useful in my next job.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was very chill in the office. Everyone seemed to get on with each other whether they were in the same department or not. Although there is a hierarchy in the company everyone treats each other as equals, one example of this is the fact that everyone refers to each other using their first name - even the most senior partners.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • When you join you are given a mentor and a champion. I still don't know who my "champion" was and because of scheduling complications I ended up having about 5 separate mentors, which defeated the point of having them as a point of contact. There were a few HR mixups along the way which made things a bit more stressful when I joined, but other than that the internship was quite well occupied.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Depends on which areas of the company you're interested in applying to. From my experience audit can be very a good area for training and development but once you get your qualifications you need to leave to get a competitive salary. Supposedly the retention rate of audit employees after they become accredited is very poor.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London was very expensive, as you would expect. The cost of travelling around to client sites added to the cost of living, and I found it hard to get reimbursed when I had to travel between the main office and client offices. There wasn't a huge amount of socialising but when there was we tried to make the most out of the company's subsidised social events.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't really get a chance to go out a huge amount. London is London so there is something for everyone. The only problem is how expensive it is to go out in the city, so as I said above it's worth trying to take as much advantage of Deloitte sponsored events as much as possible - they are very generous when it comes to bar and restaurant tabs!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really, there were a few events run for interns and you could take part in a couple sports teams if you went out of your way to speak to a colleague who took part in one. There were lots of dinners and drinks but not a huge amount of variation outside of that.
