About You
The event was highly enjoyable due to the range of people, from Senior Partner to trainees, with whom we were able to interact. The 'business game' group project undertaken in the afternoon was particularly engaging. Additionally, the variety of presentations and activities which were provided ensured that the day was extremely useful in terms of gaining a real insight into Taylor Wessing.
A real effort was made by the firm on this front. It was emphasised that its trainees are the 'partners of the future', and all who presented seemed to have a genuine enthusiasm regarding Taylor Wessing and the graduate opportunities which they provide. It was clear throughout that they were keen for everyone in attendance to submit a vac scheme or training contract application if they thought that the firm would be the right place for them.
A great deal of advice was imparted relating to Taylor Wessing's graduate opportunities, the application process, and the training contract itself. There was a clear structure to the day, as set out in the welcome talk from the firm's graduate recruitment officer, and sessions were run by a variety of different people.
The presentation on interview and public speaking skills was particularly useful and relevant to the processes involved at an assessment centre, as well as during a vacation scheme. It was great to be able to put into practice the advice received at this session during the business scenario group presentation in the afternoon.
The Company
The open day was particularly well organised, with appropriate time given to each presentation/session. A clear structure to the day was set out, and there was a real variety of presentations, networking opportunities, and group work. This clear structure meant that everything was run efficiently, and there was never a time where we were left with nothing to do.
The firm was very welcoming and everyone I interacted with was informative and enthusiastic about Taylor Wessing. All of the trainees I spoke to had been enjoying their time at the firm, and there was a sense that they were given real responsibility and meaningful work. The firm's forward-thinking and open door culture was evident.
The opportunity to receive advice specific to Taylor Wessing's application process, as well as the qualities and attributes they look for in future trainees, was very useful. The firm ensured that a variety of staff were running sessions and it was clear that they wanted us to gain a true insight into the application process, in order to be in the best possible position to submit an excellent application.
Talking to trainees, both at lunch and at the drinks reception at the end of the day, provided an opportunity to understand more about what training and working at Taylor Wessing is really like. Furthermore, there was information presented earlier in the day about the firm's forward-thinking culture, open door policy, and sector focus.
There was a focus in the morning sessions on how Taylor Wessing's culture sets it apart from other firms. Through interacting with current trainees during the day, I was able to gauge how that culture actually impacts upon the day to day life of the firm. All-in-all, a very good insight into Taylor Wessing's culture was provided.
I was already set on a career as a solicitor before attending Taylor Wessing's open day. However, the day did help to cement in my mind the kind of firm I would like to work with. Moreover, the insight into how Taylor Wessing focuses on four key sectors was interesting, and something which I think is a real positive. I am looking at other firms with this kind of sector focus in addition to Taylor Wessing.
Everything Else
Open day participants at Taylor Wessing are reimbursed travel expenses incurred in attending the day. This is a positive as it allows prospective trainees to attend the event who might otherwise have been put off by the travel costs - for instance those coming from further afield than London and the South East.
There were presentations given by Taylor Wessing's graduate recruitment officer, its Senior Partner, and a partner in the Finance group. There were also opportunities to meet with trainees during lunch and at a drinks reception at the end of the day. All of these interactions were useful in gaining a greater insight into the firm.
The graduate recruitment officer and the two partners all had useful and relevant advice to impart. Further to this, all of the trainees were very engaging and willing to talk about their experiences of the firm thus far. They were honest about life at the firm, and enthusiastic about sharing what they felt distinguished Taylor Wessing from other firms.
The principal way to find out about activities outside of work was through networking with the current trainees of the firm. There was no specific presentation about activities outside of work but this is very understandable as there was a great deal of other relevant information to cover through the day. Moreover, the interactions with trainees provided sufficient information on this topic.
I would definitely recommend Taylor Wessing's open day. Through attending the day, I have gained a real insight into the firm, as well as advice and skills regarding applications, interviews, and potential assessment centre tasks. There is only so much information one can gain from a firm's website, so it is really useful to be able to spend the day at a firm.
