The Role
As a systems test engineer ,i enjoyed everyday working with the company as i was constantly challenged and tested by my mentors and colleagues, helping me improve my overall skill level as an engineer.I was given ownership and responsibility for my own developments which i believe is a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
My colleagues treated me like one of their own, valued every opinion and idea that i put forward. They acknowledged my ideas on design concepts and valued my input on projects that played an integral part for the business.I was treated like a professional from day one and i believe it played an important role in self development.
My Mentor and supervisor was of immense help at all times. He was always around for a helping hand.He guided me professionally and helped me become a better systems test engineer under his watch. He would provide daily updates on any improvements that i needed to work on ,and would always provide positive feedback.
On a day to day basis ,the work load would vary depending on the projects you have been assigned to complete.Apart from that i was involved with helping other systems enginneers whenever there was a break inbetween projects. But constantly i was involved in completing test suites ,and writing test reports
The Level of responsibility given to a placement student from the company is huge.Within the first month of joining the company , i was given a test project, along with many other tasks that were crucial to some of the more high priority projects.I was also asked to carry out a background project in designing and building test equipment,in which i was given full ownership for my ideas and the product itself.
Along the lines of my degree in which i study MEng in Aerospace Systems.I believe working at ASM as a systems test engineer has improved my overall outlook as an engineer .The training i have received would definitely help me in the future to be competent for my final year as an MEng student. The Skills i have gained from my experience would forever act as a favourable factor in obtaining my chartership as an engineer.
The Company
The general atmosphere at my work place was calm and silent at my work desk I would spend most of my time documenting test suites, checklists, design proposals and of course test reports. In the lab it was a bit nosier with the entire equipment running and I spend most of my day testing systems in the lab. The overall atmosphere is friendly and everyone’s out there to give you a hand when you need one.

The Culture
We had a total of 5 placement students, one for each department within the company. It was a good atmosphere with the fellow students as we socialised every day. We had our occasional events which we organised, in terms of dinners, night outs .We also enjoyed the occasional game of beach volleyball during the summer ,which is a must do as the sandy beach is right around the corner.

The nightlife in the area is quite dull to be honest. There aren’t many clubs around especially the fact it’s not a student based town. Since it’s a coastal village there are many pubs that you could go for an occasional pint or two for, But if you are looking for high rise nigh out, this is definitely not the area to do so.
There are many activities that you can get involved with outside work. Ranging from Football to cricket there are many sports that the company hosts that you could get involved with. I myself play badminton and volleyball occasionally outside work hours, as I find this a great way to socialise and get to know your fellow colleagues.
