The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with CRUK.
I felt very valued, as I was given real responsibility and my own projects which I will be used by my team after I have left.
My manger was always there to help me, whether it was arranged catch-up or I just had a quick question to ask her.
My level of business varied depending on the stage in my project, but I was generally pretty busy, but I also wasn't rushed by my colleagues and they made sure I wasn't overwhelmed.
I was given real responsibility taking on projects similar to that that other members of staff were doing. I also represented my team internally and externally as any other member of stff would.
It helped me secure a job for after my placement. There is such a variety in internships offered that you can choose one that develops exactly the skills that you want.
The Company
The atmosphere around the office at Cancer Research UK was very friendly, but also people are working very hard. As an intern, everyone was willing to help me and valued the work that I added, which made it a very nice atmosphere for me to work in. There were also lots of cross-organisational events and talks that we could attend that helped to create an open atmosphere.
`The internship was very well organised and set up. Once given the offer, we were kept up to date by the intern manager, who was really lovely. After starting, she was regularly in contact with any information we needed, personal development opportunities and all manner of things. Everyone in the office is also very aware of how to manage interns.
As a volunteer, CRUK made sure that our time here was valuable to both us and them. Within my team, my mangers offered training opportunities whether it was with the whole team in a group or sitting at my desk taking me through how to do something. The interns also had their own personal development activities, such as presentation skills, CV workshop and interview skills
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
The internship definitely does help you secure a position at CRUK, and gives you a definite advantage over other candidates when getting an interview. However, the internship does not guarantee you a job at CRUK, but I have found that the experience in general has broadened my experiences and helped me to secure several interviews and indeed a job.
The Culture
Yes! We had regular trips to the pub after work that really popular, and we were offered reduced prices at bars in the area. It was a really great way of getting to know some great people. We were also encouraged to organised some fundraising ourselves, which was another great way of getting to know the other interns from across different departments. Also, due to the large intake, most interns had others in their team so there's always another intern around to talk to.
The lunch allowance covers a good lunch, and there is also the canteen which is a good place to eat, However, as an unpaid internship may interns needed to work another job to afford to do things after work.
Great bars, pubs and restaurants! Not sure about clubs.
Yes! Everyone is emailed about any opportunities to get involved in CRUK events, such as bucket collecting on World Cancer Day or going to sports events. For other opportunities it is slightly more difficult to get involved, but if you ask around and ask the right people, you should be able to get involved in a lot of different things outside of your everyday work.
