The Role
I really enjoyed my internship and felt it was very beneficial. It ha given me a real insight into the charity sector and has made me consider things that I had never thought of before, helping me make informed decisions about my career. The internship itself was very varied and had lots of different challenges which kept it interesting!
I felt very valued. The North West and North Wales Events team were very welcoming and everyone was really valued. As the internship was voluntary everyone was always so grateful for all the work we did at every stage and people were very keen to tell you if you had done good work.
Everyone I came across in Cancer Research UK was very supportive, not just those in my team and my direct managers. My direct manager was always on hand by email or available for a quick chat if I ever had any questions. We had regular meetings so that I could keep on top of my progress.
The internship was a 20 hours a week placement that I fit around my normal life so how busy I was varied on my schedule. Some days I was really busy and attending lots of different meetings and some days I had an office day where I could catch up on emails. I always felt there was something to do so I was never bored!
The amazing thing about this internship is that the team are very trusting and want you to take charge of your own projects. They give you real responsibility over your own projects and you can take them in whatever direction that you wanted. It was the level of responsibility that interns have that first attracted me to the internship as that can be quite rare!
I felt like I developed many new skills that I previously did not have. I believe that the experiences I have had will help me in future interviews and has allowed me o develop key skills that are essential in any job such as organisation, public speaking and building relationships.
The Company
This internship was a regional placement where I worked from home. However this is not the fault of the internship and is just how Cancer Research UK functions as a charity as all regional employees are based at home. Whenever we did have a team day where we all met up the atmosphere was lovely and very productive. I was often out of the house as well attending meetings which again were always great!
I feel that the internship was well organised regionally. However, there was quite a lot of disjoint between the London head office and regionally. A lot of the information that was distributed to interns was distributed from the London office and I felt like as a regional information we missed out on a lot of information that was available.
I felt that we didn't really get any training but everyone was really supportive so if I was struggling I knew I could always turn to them for more help if I needed it. We also had regular meetings to discuss my personal development and my line manager was always giving me brand new opportunities to develop.

Working from home
I would love to get a job with Cancer Research UK as the work ethos and environment was brilliant. It was amazing to work with people who were so passionate about where they worked and really believed in what they did.
The Culture
We would sometimes go for coffee during the day/after a meeting. Everyone was really lovely and I enjoyed spending time with them all and felt I could chat to them about anything over coffee. However, due to the nature of working from home there was very little social scene. I'm sure there would have been a good social scene if someone was really proactive and made sure everyone went out for drinks though.
I worked from home in the North West and so it was very cheap. Although the internship was voluntary and we didn't get paid we were paid travel expenses and were given an allowance for lunch on days we were out and about for the internship and it was always so easy to get a lunch within the allowance.
Manchester and Liverpool have a great nightlife, so many bars and restaurants.
Again, due to it being a home placement there were very little opportunities.
