The Role
The work was challenging and my colleagues were friendly.
I was included in all their meetings, but because I was working on a separate project I didn't really participate in their work.
My manager was always happy to answer my questions, and if he didn't know he would point me to someone who did.
Most days I had plenty of work to keep me busy, but on some days I had a fair amount of free time.
With respect to my project I had pretty much free reign to do as I pleased so long as my project met the specifications.
Working at ARM forced me to learn a huge amount very quickly. Over the course of the summer I learned a lot of Python and a lot about the intricacies of the C specification.
The Company
My colleagues were a great laugh, and I very much enjoyed spending time with them during lunch breaks and the like, however whilst we were working virtually everyone sat around with earphones in and ignored everyone else.
Everything I needed was provided or could be acquired easily.
In terms of explicit training, I received one half day of training that was irrelevant to my job, however when I asked a question it was answered fully.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I very much enjoyed working at ARM, but they do not have a department that focuses on my area of interest in England.
The Culture
The other interns were spread thinly across the company, so I didn't get to see them much at work but we did socialise afterwards. I had a great time socialising with my colleagues over lunch but never outside of work.
Living in Cambridge cost me a fortune, travel to London and back is well over twice the price of travelling the same distance from London to Oxford and back. The cost of renting a room absorbed over a third of what I earned not including food, travel or socialising.
There are plenty of bars and pubs dotted around Cambridge, most of which are quite nice, if a little expensive.
There were plenty of clubs and societies floating around, but none I was particularly interested in attending.
