The Role
Really enjoyed it lots of friendly people and interesting work. Split into two 6 month placements so I was able to experience more of the business.
Everyone was very friendly and I didn't have any troubles getting along with people. Though as a disclaimer this is a 'engineers' level of friendliness so although I fit right in only ever really talking about real scenarios or events, I know that some of my humanities friends would think that some of the people in the offices that I worked in where abit quiet or on the flip side sometimes a little abrasive. As ever once you get to know people there are never any problems
Given plenty of support and had both a team manager and a placement manager so had more than enough people to talk to. This didn't stop my lack of knowledge though so I still (and I think everyone does) had a month or two of learning before I started doing things that mattered.
At the start as I was still learning I wasn't that busy. However by the last 2 months of my first placement I had gotten a large project with a lot of responsibility and so was constantly juggling tasks and days would pass very quickly. However I've not got less interesting things to be getting on with and I definitely wish that I was as stuck in as I was on my first 6 months
As ever depends on what your working on, who your manager is and whether you've proven yourself to be reliable.
Definitely incredibly helpful at giving me an appreciation of what life working as an engineer is like and I know that the real world examples that I can take back to my studies next year will be very useful. I have formed the belief that you don't actually learn any engineering at university, University is just for theory so that you can talk to other engineers, it requires a job with focussed tasks and the solutions to the problems that those tasks generate are where you actually start learning engineering
