The Role
The tasks were repetitive and uninteresting and it was made quite clear on a number of occasions (via jokey comments) that the sole purpose of having the intern was so that they could perform these mundane tasks. Note - this is more or less what I had expected for early in the internship but the tasks didn't develop or change, and it was almost patronising how I was often spoken to, and so it came across as more demeaning that it might have.
It varied - all were quite pleasant but as said above, jokey comments that made it clear I was there just to help with the most boring and tiresome of tasks, although this attitude was not shared by all my colleagues, several were really nice down to earth people.
Only as much as was necessary so that I could then repeat the task as many times as possible. There was a formal internship programme the company had and gave to me, but very little attention was paid to it.
Often busy when there was a rush on something or if the call volume was high, but even then the tasks remained simple, just under pressure. Frequent periods when I had nothing assigned to do.
Moderate - occasionally responsible for chasing details from clients or employers when there was a rush on something, but generally day-to-day administrative tasks.
The only discernible skill I felt I had developed was general confidence on the telephone and other obscure pieces of knowledge about the nature of the business.
The Company
Often unpleasant - infighting, aggression, crude office politics, poor business practice - not a nice atmosphere.
There was a company programme but it was not really observed or followed.
Most of the things I did learn were incidental.
Probably could have got a job if I had wanted to, but I was not at that stage and I wouldn't have anyway.
The Culture
None to speak of.
A regional UK city, so cheaper than London but still not 'cheap as chips'. Not much socialising done anyway.
City had a good nightlife.
Nothing.
