The Role
The work was the right level of challenging and everyone in the team was very friendly and helpful. I was included in some big projects that were very interesting and gave me a real understanding of what it is like to work as part of such a big company. It helped that they take on more than 1 placement student and so there were other people here who were in the same situation as myself.
I felt as though I was a valued member of the team and my input was always welcome even if I was confused or wrong.
My supervisor was always around and available to talk to if I felt I was over burdened or under utilised. They were friendly and spent time helping me with issues if I had any. I was also assigned a mentor who I shadowed for a short time to learn some of the skills I would be using. They even allocated time out of my mentors day in his week to help me if I needed it.
Work depended on what demand was coming through the company and what projects you were assigned to. Some of my projects I finished my part before the due date and so was left without work for a short time. However, If I was short of work I was able to talk to my Supervisor and get more work to complete which meant I was never bored for long.
I was handed a great amount of responsibility that was needed for me to complete my job role.
I believe they will help me in further education as it taught me the values of having proper processes in place for people to follow. With a proper process you are more likely to get the required result. I also learnt how important communication is especially as part of a team. Without communication things can go wrong and can make tasks more difficult than they needed to be.
The Company
People in the office were always friendly. You could talk to anyone and everyone seemed happy with what they were doing and more than happy to talk to you. There was a real team spirit in the office and you could always talk to a colleague if you were having issues with anything. Great office to work in and a lot of fun to be had in this work environment.
The placement as a whole was organised well with work being laid out ahead of time so we always had visibility of what was to be coming our way and would always be trained prior to taking on tasks. However when initially joining the company it took 2 days before I could actually log into the system and I was waiting for work for the first month without a lot to do.
They provided a lot of training based around the tasks that I would be completing on a day to day basis. Text books and walkthrough's on the work I was to be completing were helpful and meant that I didn't feel I was out of my depth in the work I was assigned. There was also specific required training we had to complete each year which helped us progress with our own development as it was personal to our job role.

Working from home
The prospects here are exciting. I really enjoyed the job and there was a clear organisational structure which helped with visualising a future in the company and where I could end up. I enjoyed the job and would enjoy doing this full time outside of university. There are a few full time employees here who went through the placement program and so it proves that there are employment prospects in the future which come from this placement.
The Culture
As well as fellow placements organising trips out there were Cat young professionals outings that happened every month and sometimes twice a month. These included going to watch rugby games with other placement students or going to watch the dog racing. There was also fortnightly events organised by the staff to meet up after work.
The average rent in the area was £400 within a 10 minute drive from work. I would say that the cost of socialising is as expected in any big city. Slightly more expensive in some pubs but often very well priced. Overall there were lots of bars to go to in the area and all had an enjoyable atmosphere.
I did not really have much to do with the nightlife
There were lots of activities available outside of work. Ranging from the Robot league where you would go into schools and help school children build robots for a competition, to weekly Badminton which members of the office participated In regularly on a Monday night. There was also group cycle rides which would visit some of the local pubs which was a great activity for a lot of the members of the office.
