The Role
Throughout my year at IBM I believe that the team which I developed close interpersonal skills with made the internship incredibly enjoyable.
The role I took on throughout my placement year was similar to the role of several other full time team members. This meant that workload could be shared and that I could work closely with others in my team. Thanks to the collaboration and support provided, I felt extremely valued by my colleagues.
At several points in the year I had review sessions with my Task Manager and other IBMers. This gave them an opportunity to provide feedback and support of my current progress and provided me with areas to improve upon.
The amount of work completed fluctuated based on the time of the quarter. Closer to the end of a quarter workload increased. However there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills through internal knowledge schemes.
At the beginning of the placement responsibility was kept to a minimum. However by the end of the year I had gained the trust of my team and my task manager which meant an expansion on my responsibilities and a high level of trust.
I believe some of the skills gained this year will be useful for during my final year of university. By gaining an understanding of Cloud Infrastructure I will have an advantage during my Cloud Computing unit.
The Company
The team that I saw every day were always happy to have fun and non work related discussion as long as all work was completed. This occasionally meant going for walks and meals during lunch.
The placement was very well organised. I was assigned with two managers. A task manager - who I saw on a daily basis. And an early professional manager who assisted me with University related queries and also provided a lot of feedback. In all the roles at IBM are well organised.
Throughout the duration of the internship scheme there were plenty of opportunities to gain qualifications and attend educational sessions that were funded by IBM.
Flexi Time
National Travel
While working at IBM you are given the opportunity to apply for the Graduate scheme. You are assessed and reviewed throughout the year, this can contribute to gaining a spot for a graduate role.
The Culture
There were roughly 20 students in the Warwick location and there would be occasional meet ups.
The cost of living in Leamington and/or Warwick is fairly expensive. However multiple students on an internship usually share houses reducing costs. Socalising is also expensive within Leamington Spa
I only attended events in the evening a couple of time throughout the year. However when I did it was a good environment.
Absolutely, throughout the year there are plenty of opportunities to give back to the community through events which you can organise yourself!
