    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working at Cummins was the best experience I could of wished for. Everybody was so nice and friendly. There was also a number of placements students which was helpful because there was always a group of you from university background. And the banter was brilliant! A great environment at Cummins.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Within my department I actually felt like family within two weeks from being there. Also because of the department I worked for I had to work with more or less every department at Cummins and even outside work, and had a brilliant relationship with everybody. Coupled with this As my placement went on my job function and expectation increased. I was creating and giving presentation to all managers including the plant manager and having meeting and direct contact on a daily basis with them. Alongside this my responsibilities increase dramatically, I was given projects to run and big exspensive projects of course with support from my supervisor. But to have that kind of role and responsibility really showed me how much they valued me as a student and as a colleague.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everystep possibile, my supervisor was on the ball and my department as well. If I needed help all I had to do was ask.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am one of these people that hates not doing anything and at Cummins I always had work/jobs to do. However there was a perfect balance betwwen work and a good laugh.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Loads, far more than I ever expected. Once I had shown I was up to the challenge my responsibilities were endless. Like I said before I was producing work for many of the managers and had direct contact with external workforce, so I was producing final drawings for them.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • One thing it had developed was my confidence and willing to do well in my future education/degree. It has opened my eyes to the world of engineering. I have learnt new processes and my engineering/manufacturing knowledge has increased dramtically. My ability to organise projects and myself has come on leaps and bounds. Before coming to Cummins I would of settled for a 2:1 but i realise now that a 2:1 is just not good enough and I need to buckle down.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Full of jokes and banter. I looked forwarded to work becuase of this.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of the overall placement was superb. I had regular meetings with my manager and supervisor about my progress. Also had a mentor from the Institute of Mechanical Engineer (IMechE) and was a member of the institute which was brilliant becuase it means I have already completed one year worth towards being a Chartered Engineer.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All placement students had to attented certain courses such as Project Managerment, Diversity training, Presentation skill and Engine appreciation course. I also got extra software to develop my own personal skills such as Pro Engineerin order to produce drawings for other internal departments.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I cant really comment on this because I lived at home. But it can be cheap to socialise especially in Northampton on certain nights.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Like the same as before I have lived here all my life. But Northampton is a good crack.
