The Role
I really enjoyed it, far more than I ever expected to enjoy a summer job!
I was given the responsibility to develop a project and trusted to get on with that with support from colleagues. Other members of the company asked questions about the work I was doing and filled me in on their work, making me feel like part of Softwire.
I was extremely well supported and had regular meetings with my managers who checked up on how I was getting on and advised me in ways to learn more and develop my skills. I was also supported before beginning my internship in gaining some basic skills relevant to the job.
There were always several tasks to be getting on with and I was able to work at a pace that I felt comfortable with.
Enough responsibility that I was challenged and engaged, but not so much that I felt under pressure.
While not directly related to my degree I developed a whole host of new skills which I didn't have before and which I am almost certain that I will use in my future career.
The Company
Softwire put a lot of emphasis on morale in the company so there is a lot of emphasis put on have a good time at work. Everyone seemed engaged in what they were doing and seemed to enjoy coming to the office.
I was assigned to a project before I arrived and was given appropriate work throughout. Before I arrived Softwire were extremely on the ball - responding to all of my emails within 48 hours and answering any questions I had.
I was encouraged to take time out of project work to read books related to programming and software development. Experienced members of the company also gave us presentations on relevant technologies and strategies for development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Opportunity to come back for another internship next summer.
The Culture
We were living quite far from each other, but got on well and supported each other in our work.
I lived at home but as Softwire is based in London it's not cheap. However, being in Kentish Town it is less expensive than working in the city.
Lots of pubs, bars and restaurants and close to Camden/Central London for clubs etc.
There were regular opportunities to get involved in company events including a picnic, a trip to the zoo and a cheese and wine evening. There were also informal pub trips at least once or twice a week. In addition to this there were many social activities to take part in at the office, including table tennis, table football and video games.
