About You
I really enjoyed going and having a look around two estates and seeing how they were managed, and I was given some tasks to do in between going out and meeting people involved on the estate which was good fun. Spending time in the office allowed me to see the working environment and complete more tasks.
I felt valued because I was given tasks to complete on my own and given a larger piece of work regarding valuation. Everyone I met in the office was very friendly and made me feel welcome too.
My mentor gave me plenty of support and other people in the office were approachable and I was able to ask them for guidance on some tasks I was given to complete.
Straight away I was given tasks that related to my degree studies, helping me to see how what you learn in the lectures is carried out and applied in 'real life' situations. In addition to this, meeting new people has developed further my communicative skills that will aid me on other placements and ultimately going into the workplace.
The Company
I thought it was structured well, although I was directed to the wrong office at first by the placement letter. From then on I had tasks to complete and was told about site visits in advance which were interesting and informative. Only a couple of times did there seem a slight struggle to find something for me to do.
The atmosphere was very good in the office, everyone in the office was very friendly and helpful. In addition to this, everyone in the offices at the different estates were friendly and welcoming.
It gave a really good insight because I was able to go around with the same surveyor and see what the role involved. Further to this, spending time in the office and on the estates gave a good insight.
It helped to understand what the culture was like in the office I was placed in, but whether a bigger office has a different atmosphere and culture I'm not sure.
The shadowing and tasks provided by my mentor and other people in the office was very helpful. However, I didn't manage to listen to the departmental overviews or other talks held on the go to meeting programme. I had trouble accessing this on the first day and then I didn't feel the audio was very clear. So what I did with my mentor during the day was helpful, but I'm not sure about the online talks.
Everything Else
Because I had to stay away from home the expenses provided didn't cover accommodation and everything I spent on lunch and fuel.
Apart from meeting people in the office and out on the estates during the day I didn't meet anyone else, or get a chance to discuss people's roles within the firm.
There weren't any networking or social events, but this wasn't really an issue for me on this programme.
No I didn't.
I would definitely recommend this programme because it puts into perspective what you learn in lectures and helps you to really understand what the job involves.
