About You
I knew very little about asset management before the insight and coming to it provided me with huge clarity on exactly what it means to be an asset manager. The day was filled with trading exercises throughout, which gave an interactive insight into what the role is like, and M&G ensured we got the most out of the say by organising a Networking lunch, during which their employees were very friendly and clearly had made a huge effort to speak with us and give us any insight that they could.
I felt valued by the company because they took the time to answer all our question, even if they were very 'simple' or trivial. Organising a graduate panel to whom we could ask question about both the job but also the more imminent application process showed that M&G understood our needs and had made an effort to serve them.
There were very clear instructions on what to do for the trading exercises and by having this interactive session we received a better idea on what asset management is like than we would have had someone just simply guided us through a talk about the industry. At the networking lunch, staff made an effort to approach us (thus saving us from the daunting task) and bring up topics about the industry that we may have otherwise been worried to ask about, such as working hours and relative pay.
The insight showed me the importance of keeping up with global affairs and understanding the effects of the economy on assets you may be managing, therefore any knowledge about these both within and outside my degree are things I will pay more attention to now. M&G also hosted a skills workshop (employment skills) on the day, which demonstrated what skills are necessary and also made me aware of what skills I should look at gaining.
The Company
The insight was very well structured. We played trading games in teams and in between whilst the M&G staff were counting out scores, we were welcomed with talks from senior staff and graduates. This meant than we were able to experience a range of things as part of the insight, and also that it ran very smoothly.
All students that came to the insight were very engaged, welcoming, and easy to work with, making the trading exercises a pleasure to participate in. The staff were also very warm and welcoming, answering all our questions even if they may have been very trivial for them. Both senior staff and graduates were very welcoming, suggesting a friendly atmosphere within the company.
The company did not invest much in us but that is to be expected from a single-day insight. However, M&G ensured that they packed the day with as much as they could in order to give us an insight to asset management, and in that sense they did a lot to ensure we could get the most information from the little time we had with them.
The company did a good job at helping us to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with them through the networking lunch and graduate panel. At both, we were able to ask question not only about the industry, but M&G itself, including relative pay, working hours, work/life balance, the pros and cons of working in the industry, etc.
M&G's insight day left me with a greater interest in exploring asset management, particularly because I enjoyed the simulation of the industry they created via the trading exercises. Although I am not set on asset management as there are other possible future career paths that I would like to explore, M&G's insight day definitely led it to be one of the career paths that I am most interested in.
Everything Else
There were opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company. Firstly, there was the networking lunch at which we had the opportunity to talk to employees from different divisions and at difference stages of their career, from graduate level to senior. Secondly, at the end of the day there was a graduate panel where we were able to ask more question we had, which I also found extremely useful.
