The Role
I loved every second of my placement
I have met some fantastic people who I hope to stay friends with forever. I was treated like part of the team and not just an outsider, it felt like I was working there. We attended all team meetings and were treated the same as our colleagues with regards to the comments we made.
We were given lots of support whenever we asked for it. But luckily they took on two interns so I always had someone else there who I could problem solve with on a more regular basis, this was invaluable.
There was always lots to be getting on with and we were given lots of different projects to get our teeth in to. We could focus where we wanted to and this meant we could do things at our own pace. We did have deadlines but I never felt like I had too much on, plus I think I enjoyed the work far too much for it to bother me even if I did take on too much. We could self manage what we took on.
We were given lots of responsibility, we even gave a pitch to an important corporate client on our own.
I have been given the opportunity to learn SO much on this placement; about the charity sector, Cancer Research UK, fundraising and myself!
The Company
We had 'bake off's' and a laugh with members of staff. It was only a small office but lots of different people used it each day so I got a good insight into lots of different departments.
We were given lots of opportunities to work in the areas or with the people we wanted to, which enabled me to tailor the placement to myself.
Most of the training and development was self taught from the experiences I had. The staff did have a lot of time for me, if I need to know something I could ask. At the start we had some larger training sessions to introduce us to the charity, these gave a fantastic insight into CRUK. We also had a CV, interview and application skills training day which was brilliantly orchestrated!
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I would love a job with them, we have access to apply for internal jobs at Cancer Research UK and I now feel I have a good understanding of the charity so fingers crossed!! I just have to wait for the right thing to come up.
The Culture
There was only one other girl on an internship in my office. I have made a friend for life with her! we got on really well. We also met some other students when we visited London but I would have liked to get to know them better, I know they had a good social scene.
My placement was back home so I was living at my folks. My expenses were paid, this included travel and lunch so effectively cost me nothing to do the placement, I just missed a day where I could earn money, but I worked every weekend to fund myself.
Leeds has a fantastic nightlife!
We got involved with lots of extra opportunities such as a reception day at Westminster for MP's, trips away for committee meetings or action team meetings, corporate pitches, staff regional meetings, there was always lots going on.
