About You
The week was very well structured. The project was set at a good difficulty level. I learned more than I was expecting to. The other interns were clearly highly motivated and intelligent individuals but without an overly-competitive edge which made for a very positive working environment. Overall it was a very positive experience and I would highly recommend it.
Everyone was very welcoming and friendly but I can't quite justify putting 'like family' as we were, at the end of the day, interns and not colleagues.
Fantastic ratio of HR team members to interns so there was always someone free that we could ask for help. The networking opportunities also provided us with an opportunity to ask as many questions as we might have had about the company, and in some cases, to ask for guidance on how best to approach the group project.
I'm afraid that the technical skills and other insights I learned won't come in much handy on an engineering degree. They will, of course, be helpful if I am fortunate enough to end up working in the industry. I felt that the balance between technical and qualitative seminars was well struck.
The Company
It was great. The other interns were clearly highly motivated and intelligent individuals but without an overly-competitive edge which made for a very positive working environment. We were told at the start of the week that there was enough space for all of us on the summer internship programme and that we would not be put through an assessment centre on the last day, this created a positive and collaborative working environment.
The networking events provided us with the opportunity to ask all the questions we might have had about the firm and gave us a great feel for the company culture and the environment we would be working in. We were also given a team project to present a potential M&A deal between two companies which provided us with some useful insight.
Thanks to several networking events throughout the week, we were given direct exposure to potential future colleagues which gave us a great degree of insight into the culture of the firm. Most of the seminars we were given made consistent references to Rothschild's unique business model and how that factored into each division.
I already knew prior to the Sping Insight Week that I wanted to pursue a career in M&A. However, had I not, I am sure that by the end of the week I would have had a very clear idea about which division of Rothschild's Global Advisory group I would be interested in joining, if pursuing finance at all.
Everything Else
We were offered £5 for lunch and travel expenses covered upon presentation of receipts at the end of the week. There were a number of good takeaway restaurants and cafes nearby as well as the usual slew of Pret's, Eat's and sushi places. Expenses for travel were capped at £70 I believe, with the possibility of a higher cap on a case-by-case basis if you spoke to HR.
Yes, several. We had two work shadowing opportunities and a number of networking drinks and lunches. Not only did this provide us with the opportunity to get to know others at the firm, but it also meant that the interns got to know each other much more quickly that we might have done otherwise
Very well organised and enjoyable.
Yes, we had a morning's volunteering at a local children's centre and a seminar detailing Rothschild's community involvement. The morning's volunteering work was good fun and broke up the week well (it was on Wednesday morning). I found particularly interesting that Rothschild puts no limit on the number of hours that their employees can volunteer.
Absolutely.
