About You
The insight was incredibly useful in giving us a genuine look as to how the firm operates as a business. Seeing how the provision of legal services translates as practical advice was definitely eyeopening.
I don't think this question really applies that much to the insight day but i definitely felt that the culture of the firm was a friendly and amicable one.
The trainee we had was very good in aiding us with the business game exercise. She made sure that we were confident when we went in and was just a lovely person overall.
The partner's speech on the TW sectors was almost an introduction to commercial awareness through osmosis. We were given a very frank talk on how the company chooses to operate and why it makes certain decisions, including its own limited international presence, and understanding how to now differentiate between firms when visiting or applying and what to look out for has become much clearer.
The Company
Very well structured! The schedule for the day was clear and there were plenty of breaks to help us make it through. I only wish i had gone to bed earlier so that i was better prepared for such a jam packed day.
Again, as i have said, it was very pleasant. Everyone was normal. It sounds like a silly thing to say but realising that the people around you are just like you and make up the firm around you erodes the imposter syndrome i felt walking in. It also makes you feel like you can actually reach where they have reached someday too. In one word, the atmosphere was 'caring'.
This insight day in particular did not feel like a day which intended to personally develop anyone. Team building skills and public speaking skills were exercised but not developed. It was more of a fun way to see how law firms practically carry out their jobs. The tips for interviews and assessments however were incredibly useful, even if not personalised, as they even covered a pitch anagram before you enter that associates themselves use.
Most of the time, people assume that a career at a major law firm usually means 'long hours, missed family vacations, and significant burnout'. But, this continuous work cycle was dispelled as a myth after the open day as, whilst the amounts of labor performed is still quite high, the work is enjoyable, the people are nice and the firm understands that its employees actually have lives too.
One really useful piece of advice that i was given was that i should use the opportunity as a benchmark comparator. See what other firms are similar or different, see what i remember most from the firm and see how the staff interact when you're not really supposed to be focusing on them. It has helped me significantly. I don't think i can say from a day i know everything, but the culture is very supportive. People work towards common goals because they want to see the business succeed and the direction of the firm truly is forward thinking in everything they do.
I'd already know what i wanted to do before i attended.
Everything Else
I did not ask for reimbursement because i only paid 60p to get to the firm.
Networking lunch was great.
As aforementioned.
No.
Definitely.
