About You
I thought the day was well structured and enjoyed the fact that talks were interspersed with opportunities to interact as a group with trainees or in the group exercise. Everyone at the firm was so friendly and welcoming which added to the whole experience.
all contributions to group discussions were appreciated by the employees and by others attending the insight day. Definitely felt like we were seen as potential lawyers at the firm not just uni students
The guidance re application process and what the firm was looking for was amazing! It was as specific as I imagine it could be without telling us exactly what to write. Also it was nice to hear it from different people in different positions throughout the day
The talk by Sarah Harte on interview tips was one I will remember and take with me to all future interviews. The picture acronym is so useful and easy to remember. Also, the tips on writing a personal and not boring or generic application form were important as were the constant reminders about the importance of understanding the business side of law, which I realise I had underestimated before the insight day.
The Company
Very well structured and nice to have breaks regularly. Really enjoyed the range of opportunities packed into one day too with opportunities to hear from both a senior partner and trainees. Right length of day as well and nice to not stay in the same room all day but have a chance to look around the office a bit. I liked that it started with an overview of the firm and its objectives and then the subject matter gained depth and detail as the day progressed.
Slightly competitive between some students, but nothing more than would usually happen at an insight day. Overall though the firm had a relaxed and non stuffy atmosphere, especially when compared to some other firms. Every employee was courteous and friendly and seemed genuinely interested in hearing us speak.
I learnt something new in each talk and activity, be it information or a new skill. The group exercise was particularly useful as it was the first time I had done anything of that sort and it was good to put into practice the skills on which we had just been educated. It would be beneficial to receive some feedback on the pitch as I think this would really help with furthering personal development.
The insight day was really useful in this regard as not only did we get a chance to learn about the type of work and transactions the firm is involved in, but we also had the chance to talk to trainees and find out about the day in the life of them. Being able to ask about what time they finished work and about the working atmosphere at the firm in an informal setting was invaluable.
The company culture was embedded throughout the day, not only in the content of the talks but in the way we were addressed during the talks, and in interactions we saw between employees. I think both the firm's external culture, regarding expansion and growth aims, and internal culture, the work ethic and mindset of employees, were well represented during the day.
As most of the students on the insight day had already decided on law as a career, there was less information about law vs other careers. However, due to the time constraints of the day and the fact that this information is not firm specific and can be found through personal research, I didn't mind at all. It was definitely helpful in that I discovered more about the business side of law which has further cemented my decision to pursue a legal career.
Everything Else
My travel expenses were reimbursed and lunch and drinks were provided.
Plenty of time to talk to trainees over lunch and during the group exercise. Was really nice to talk to them in small groups and ask them any informal questions.
The selection of students was really good and we were all there for the same reason so was easy to talk to everyone. There was lots of time especially during the drinks at the end to network and it was nice to speak to other students who are going through the same application process.
There was ample mention of the trainees social calendar and events schedule. Also, the opportunities for sport were mentioned as was the trip abroad.
Definitely would recommend strongly and not just the insight day but the firm in general to my student friends interested in law, as it was the best example of how a firm could treat students on an insight day and make they feel that although the application process is hard work and competitive, it is achievable and rewarding too.
