The Role
Fantastic- I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. The work was stimulating, it was a very pleasant place to work, and I felt I learned skills which will be useful in years to come.
This was one of the best things about the work experience- the atmosphere in the workspace was superb. Everybody was friendly and made an effort to help and get to know me.
Again, the guidance and support given was excellent- I went from knowing next to nothing to being able to start producing useful stuff within a couple of days, and my supervisor spent a lot of time helping me with things I didn't know/understand.
Pretty busy, on the whole, which is a far better thing than not having enough to do! It's partly up to you how much effort you put in- the work hours are pretty flexible- but the overall goals are important and were spaced pretty well for me- they are used to dealing with work experience students.
Although I was having all of my output checked over (which was extremely necessary!), from about day 2 I was working on stuff that will eventually be used by customers- I really felt as if I was making a solid contribution.
Quite apart from the technical skills I acquired (being able to write computer code, at least on a basic level, being the most significant), it was an excellent way to learn about what it is like to work in an office, which is useful for just about anyone if you haven't yet decided what you want to do as a full-time job.
The Company
As I've said before, the office atmosphere was superb- whilst there was a focus on doing the work, everybody was helpful and more than willing to chat or help out.
They are clearly used to dealing with internship students- the system in place for dealing with us ran pretty smoothly and there weren't any major problems while I was there.
I felt as if the company made a real effort to teach me the skills I would need for my work there, and more importantly skills which could potentially be useful in the future which I didn't necessarily need over the summer.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
They encourage most internship students to return if they still have more time in education- the internship program also offers a route into the company as a graduate, if you have impressed during your time there!
The Culture
This was very good, since there were about 30 interns working over the summer and we all got on pretty well- the job seems to attract similar sorts of people!
This wasn't too bad, since the company provides subsidised accomodation for interns at a pretty good rate and there are various supermarkets nearby.
The area isn't a particulary loud one at night, but there are several good pubs which tended to frequented by the interns most days after work.
There were loads of activities organised by the company which were all open to interns- there are easily enough that you won't be able to take part in anywhere near all of them.
