The Role
I very much enjoyed the placement. As a data scientist, I had the opportunity to work with passionate people who made every day enjoyable.
Generally in IBM, I felt that I was valued the same as a permanent employee. There was the occasional exception, so some room for improvement, but this was very rare.
The management I worked for were wonderful. Again, the passion of the senior people was always clear to see, so any time I needed support they were always more than happy to help.
A bit of a split. Most days were perfect but the project-based nature of the work meant that days not assigned to a project were much slower than others.
A much higher level of responsibility than could be expected. During the projects, I was given the work of a junior data scientist, rather than simply being the 'intern'.
The skills I have developed will set me up for my studies and my career ahead. The mix of technical and business skills learned on the job will be invaluable for the future.
The Company
Overall the atmosphere was always friendly and easy-going. A couple of people left during my placement which meant that some of the atmosphere was lost.
Since I was the first placement student the team had ever had, the make-up of the position changed somewhat from start to finish. I ended up doing more project work than was initially expected.
Company training facilities and resources were open to me, although a lack of funding often hindered some of the more formal technical training.

Working from home
IBM have a number of different positions available that I would be interested in, and management has always been supportive of me re-applying, so I will be doing so.
The Culture
There were many placement students in Southbank, most of whom were always happy to be sociable.
Central London working location meant that costs were high. As expected though.
A collection of bars and restaurants (and a Christmas market) very close to work meant that after work social occasions were often.
Lots of centrally organised Giveback events meant that I could participate in a number of different activities throughout my year.
