The Role
Whether or not to come into work was never a difficult choice for me, as each day presented itself with new challenges and choices, as well as building on the initial role and its various skills. I feel that I was doing what I wanted to do, and it was enjoyable in most moments of the day, only becoming tedious when I had to deal with a disgruntled employee.
My team quickly took me in and helped acclimatize me to the office environment, assisting and supporting me in everyday tasks until I learned my role. Then they were there to offer help if it was needed and advise me about the more intricate parts of the business that they were experts in.
Both of my managers helped train me in my role, providing me with support and being there to assist me if I needed it. My Early Professionals Manager helped induct me in the first week and has monitored my progress and professional growth throughout my placement year and advised me on future opportunities.
I felt that I was given enough work to challenge me, but I have never been so busy it has stressed me. Perhaps at times the workload became a little light, but there were always opportunities for education and personal development while I had a more relaxed time to myself.
I was put in charge of a Support inbox for telecoms inquiries and ordering for the UK and Ireland, and I was responsible for people ordering handsets and answering their queries and helping them with problems. As a placement position this felt like a lot of responsibility at the beginning, but I have grown comfortable with the idea now.
I feel that I was mostly trained in specifically IBM software and systems, so unless I apply back for a future role I won't need a lot of that. However it has helped improve my learning skills, and I feel I can grasp most programs with ease and speed now.
The Company
The office was a little quiet as most people kept to themselves and worked on their laptops at their desks, however the office was entirely open plan so you could communicate easily. Agile working was a big iniative, and conversations could be heard across the room clearly, which made a focus on work.
The work placement was like any other job at IBM, and was very well organized, I received the training and instructions I needed to properly do my role. However, the application process lacked communication at parts, leaving me in the dark on most things even up to the induction week.
There is an IBM Initiative called "Think 40" and it means you have to do 40 hours of education across the year. The programs that count towards education and personal development were extensive and intricate, allowing you to study from a broad range of topics and really go into detail with it all.

As I am already a part of the IBM ecosystem, I am eager to return to the company, as I thoroughly enjoyed my role and working in the IBM offices. I already have a foot in the door and I hope that this allows me to easily secure a role in the future.
The Culture
While the interns were encouraged to eat together in the canteen and go out together, that quickly fell apart as people's roles started to overshadow their social life, with many people staying after work at month end and working over the weekend in some extreme cases. However, I was usually never pressed for time, just the people around me.
