The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at IBM. It allowed me to build and develop skills i had gained at university and gave me an insight into how those skills could be applied into a working environment.
At IBM i didn't feel just like an intern i was a key part of the team with responsibilities that needed to be carried out consistently and efficiently to maintain team progress.
My manager changed half way through the year but both gave me plenty of support. Both were happy to help/ explain tasks more clearly and arranged regular catch ups to decide how tasks could be improved.
Workload was sometimes inconsistent - there woud be set days in the week where i would be busier than others (Cadence days) but there were lots of extra opportunities to get involved with the extended team/ for events.
As the length of my placement increased so did my level of responsibility - this was also as a result of my increase in knowledge of the business process. For example during cadence (review) calls - as i became more familiar with the opportunities and the opportunity process i was given more responsibilityand able to run the process independently when my manager was not available.
Although my role was not directly linked to my degree there were a variety of skills that we needed in both this business focused role and my mathematics degree such as team work, communication, excel and presentation skills.
The Company
There was a great atmosphere with flexi desks allowing networking opportunities with employees outside of my immediate team.
Very organized - with regular reviews and catch ups with my EPM and a clear route on how to address any problems.
Although not sent on any training courses directly there was lots of on the job training - starting with a handover period form the previous intern that did my role before me. I then relieved help and guidance from both my team and manager.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Very appealing
The Culture
With over 150 interns based at my location (South Bank) there was a great social scene.
Due to my location i was able to commute from home.
Again i was able to live at home (Essex).
IBM has a giveback scheme which allows interns and grads to participate in events to help the wider community such as mock assessment centres/ placement fairs and practice interviews.
