The Role
Thoroughly enjoyable experience working within the Planning and Regeneration team at Savills.
Very welcoming department from day one, particularly within the smaller working groups. I was given regular feedback and commendation by the team and could see how my work was contributing to larger tasks.
All members of staff would be willing to help if asked. However, there was an expectation to use your own initiative which I think is a positive. Good support by the HR team who would quickly reply to questions or comments and were always at the end of the email or telephone.
I felt like a well-integrated team member and was given work on my first day. There were only a few days where I could've been given more work but on the whole there was a good range and quantity of work to be getting on with.
I was given responsibility in the sense of I was charged with genuine client work and did attend meetings and send out external emails where I represented the company. However, before sending out details my team members were happy to run through, check and amend any work as appropriate.
I undertook the placement having already completed my undergraduate studies, however I'm sure the skills and knowledge learnt will assist me when undertaking my Masters. Also, it has confirmed this is the career I wish to pursue so experience is usually seen very favorably.
The Company
Very friendly, humurous, but focussed, office. Good frequency of social activities to get involved with.
Very well organised both by HR and then individual team groups. HR organised regualar talks by various departments from within Savills, rounders with current graduates. A 'half-way' review was also handy in discussing with HR how you were getting on and set objectives on what to achieve throughout your time with the company.
Internal talks were interesting, including one on the APC process. Difficult to see how they could've done more given that it was a summer placement.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to continue working for Savills after my studies and hope to stay in contact with team members. I will definatley apply to the Graduate scheme and think the summer scheme experience is very beneficial in this respect.
The Culture
There were regular social events - formal, informal, small gatherings and large gatherings - throughout the summer scheme. These did not all involve drinking either.
Central London as should be expected is often expensive. Average £4-6 a pint.
It was there if you wanted it, but as I was commuting into London I often didn't stay beyond 10pm. Central London is, of course, often pricey.
There were several emails sent around regarding out of work opprtunities, many of which were open to all.
