The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement year within IBM. IBM is a great multinational company to work for with a great culture. The internship roles are real roles and you can make a serious impact and add value to IBM.
I have felt part of the team since I started, everyone is really friendly and they all want you to do your best. There is a strong culture to network through IBM and people are always willing to have a chat.
During the beginning of my role I had a handover from the previous intern which really helps you learn everything you need to know quickly. Managers are also very supportive to give you guidance to ensure you get the most of your internship year.
Due to the nature of my role I do have busier periods and quieter times. IBM does tend to have a flexible working environment so you can balance out time if you have been really busy one week. There is plenty of support if you need help to finish a deadline and on the other hand they're many giveback opportunities like returning to university career fairs to get involved in if you are quieter.
Within my role I have been given loads of responsibility which is great! It allows you to learn loads and also feel like you are adding constant value to the business.
The skills I have learnt throughout the year will definitely help me in my final year such as presentations becoming less daunting but also increase my graduate prospects having 12+ months of real work experience on my CV.
The Company
The culture within IBM is very friendly, everyone wants to help you if they can. It is quite flexible working therefore would say the culture is laid back especially in some locations more than others. There are also many other interns which you can do roundtables and events with throughout the year which are always fun.
IBM has a very good and organised work placement scheme, It has been set up for many years and there are quite a lot of interns within IBM. They understand what you as an intern want to get out from the year and are always encouraging you to do more and put yourself out of your comfort zone every now and again to ensure you are progressing and learning.
They're a few workshops held at different locations which interns can get involved in, depending on your location does tend to depend on how much training and development opportunities there are. Such as London being more popular for events due to more interns being based there. There isn't any opportunity to participate in any paid education/qualifications as interns but I feel overall you learn alot from the year anyway.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
I will definitely apply back to the IBM Graduate scheme.
The Culture
As mentioned there are a lot of other interns within IBM spread across the UK. The social scene is more dominate in the london offices than any others just due to the location and facilities near by, However it is also what you make of it, within smaller offices there are still other social opportunities and you can always make your own event to!
I was based in the IBM Hursley offices and lived within a 20min car journey commute to work. The rent and socialising costs are reasonable for the area, you can comfortably live of the IBM salary, pay rent and still have money to social/save!
Within Hursley the nightlife is minimal however nearby city Winchester has many great bars and pubs that you can go to.
Within the Hursley grounds you can get a clubhouse membership onsite, they organise many events throughout the year from films, sport, family days or just going for a drink or meal on the grounds. Within the nearby city of Winchester there are many things you can get involved in depending what you are interested in.
