The Role
It was been hard work however there is good variety in my role and I have been able to visit a Customer and a Channel Partner.
I have been trusted with my own projects and have been responsible to cover my managers work whilst they have been on holiday. We work closely together.
I have been encouraged to learn independently and build my own network of contacts however I have also been able to go back to my Task Manager and ask for help. I also have a Personal Manager who I meet with at least once a month to see how I am doing and whether I am having any problems.
It depends on the time of year. I support channel partners and IBM sellers therefore I am often busy at month end and quarter end and very busy at year end. Other times of the year I have more free times and can spend time on projects that are not directly linked with my job role.
Lots! My manager has given me options to take on my own projects. My manager also went on holiday for a month and I was completely responsible for answering queries for our Task ID throughout UK and Ireland.
My job has been quite specialised and I have learnt a lot of information about IBM's software licensing program which can only be applied to IBM (through channel partners and IBM sellers). I have also learnt a lot of soft skills like working under pressure and managing my time which are invaluable anywhere.
The Company
There was a nice network of people around me who are very friendly. There is only me and my manager in our Team so my office atmosphere are people who don't work in my job area.
It was very good. My manager has had 9-10 interns before me so they knew how to teach me the job role and develop my skills.
They had social/networking and learning events for Placement students and Apprentices only (travel reimbursed) to learn new things. There is also a wide fountain of knowledge online through the Learning Academy and video learning.
Working from home
The Culture
Yes- In my location there were about 40-50 interns and IBM set up a facebook group to organise housing. From there we just socialised on our own time. (Nights out of the weekend, relaxing on the beach after work in the summer, barbecues, etc)
Cheaper than my University.
Variety of clubs and bars. Good on a student night.
There are lots of opportunities in my location however you have to research them. IBM didn't suggest any so I googled some things.
