The Role
Initially the placement was very good with new experiences being offered daily and I very much enjoyed the role sadly over time it became apparent that a level had been reached which was not to be surpassed.
You are well valued by the team you work with which is a very good aspect of this role.
The work is very independent but there is always support if needed and is a good balance.
Due to the nature of the role this entirely depends on the day and to be honest adds to the challenge!
While you will be supervised on larger tasks the daily running of the line is pretty much your responsibly which is a big pressure. This level of responsibility is the single best part of this job as it is more than you would expect as a student.
Your communication skills will improve massively as you will be dealing with individuals at all levels within the business. This ranges from engineering to line operators and it is a key skill to be able to identify and talk to each.
The Company
The office is probably one of the best offices you will ever have the opportunity to work in. It is a young energetic office with an excellent group of people. The atmosphere is relaxed yet hard working. While your work is checked on you never feel as if you are being watched or being judged at any time.
Overall the organised work was ok. Initially there is a 2 week handover period from the previous placement students who will teaching you the majority of what you will need to know for the placement. This sets you up well for your coming year. From there your manger will be in charge of your progression and learning. I would recommend to push for larger tasks and projects as they are there if requested.
The company did not invest much in you. There was a 2 week hand over period from last years students which was the majority of the training given. Other than a couple health and safety sessions that are required by the company there was no additional teaching which was a disappointment.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Within the company there are many job roles available and Cummins has a great graduate scheme that does also source from its year in industry students. Within the company hard work is rewarded and there is flexibility to find a role that suits your strengths. This will allow pretty much anybody to enjoy a role within the company.
The Culture
Through a Facebook page set up by Cummins, social evens are organised between the placement students. These range from clubbing most weeks to cinema to trampoline park. Generally there is a good community between the students. There is also a Cummins organised karting championship which is good fun.
If your are going for a role at the Daventry plant I would recommend rugby as your base. It is a nice town not far from the plant. Your will require access to a car either your own or as part of a car share to get to and from work. Note than manufacturing students will start earlier therefor it would be useful to live together.
N/A
Outside of work there where events such as karting and sports activities. While at Cummins your will also take part in community work through the Every Employee Every Community action otherwise known as EEEC. During my time there I helped rebuild a schools garden and assisted elderly persons in their shopping trip.
