The Role
My placement year has been the biggest learning experience to date. I have met and learned about how to work with all kinds of people in a business environment. I have been given numerous opportunities to develop my skills and show them off. I will be leaving IBM feeling excited for my future but sad to leave this year and the people behind me.
I have been relied on to take on challenging tasks and they have involved me in lots of management discussions as well as asking for my input. I have
My managers have always supported me and not hesitated to ensure I am up to speed with everything going on. I have always been involved in key parts of the projects I have been on and been praised for the work I have completed.
My levels of capacity has changed a lot throughout the year. As I have progressed and proved myself I have been given more challenging tasks to complete. You have to show you are willing to put in the work to be relied on to take on more work. There were periods when I was non-stop and others where I had only my immediate tasks to complete.
At first I only took over the specific tasks I was handed over, but was quickly relied upon to do other things outside of my immediate role. After being given the chance to join a start-up project I have since been given a lot of responsibility to manage vital tasks and processes.
My confidence has grown dramatically since starting my placement and I now wish to be put out of my comfort zone in order to further my personal development. I will take away life-long skills and be confident in my abilities going forward.
The Company
The general atmosphere is quite relaxed, especially among the team I sat within. Most people are extremely helpful and easy to get a long with. I felt really relaxed with my team which helps make coming to work enjoyable.
Foundation set up numerous events, calls, lunch and learns, presentations, talks etc. They are all there to aid your personal development and help you figure out what you want to do after university.
Financial Bonus
The graduate programmes are very appealing to me and you are able to find out a lot about them during a placement at IBM. You can use this year to network with current graduates or hiring managers to aid your visibility within the company. I will definitely be applying back to their graduate scheme.
The Culture
The interns are all very sociable with a few events organised throughout the year as well as Thursdays being typical drinks after work.
I lived at home just outside of London, but commuting into London costs quite a lot. London in general is expensive to socialise in comparison to other cities but the location is great.
There are lots of bars and pubs around the South Bank location, and is easy to get to other areas of London.
There are lots of give back opportunities you can get involved with, which are great for networking and socialising with other interns.
